Need help with lightroom4 and photo size and dpi

Hi,this forum has been extremely helpful to me in the past and wondered if I could seek some help again on an issue.
I do wedding and engagement photos and I have spit out digital negatives for many years. Lightroom puts them out and I guess I never understood or knew exactly what size they are. If I wanted to make for face book I went into the image resizing and made the dpi something like 240.
Anyway, one of my engagement shots was given to a local paper and they said it was not the right size - has to be at least 4 inches and 400 dpi - I was not sure how in lightroom 4 to make this size - what is the best way and how should I be sending these digital negatives out of lightroom 4 when I export them - where and how do I say what size and what size is best to give brides and customers - I am confused on this - thank you so much for any help anyone can share!!!

DPI is just a "measuring" unit or conversion factor. If they say they need 4 inches and 400dpi, all they really need is 1600 pixels for the 4 inch dimension.

Interesting, never paid any attention to this in LR. I can do it in PSE but don't see it in LR? There is a 4 X 3 inch crop but don't see anywhere to set the resolution. You can set the resolution to 400 under print but I don't think that is going to do you any good because I don't see any way to save it.

I would do your crop as you want making sure it is at least 4 inches. Then go under printing and scroll down to print resolution, check that box, and set it to 400 ppi. Then do a save.

Before we get into the usual discussion about dpi and ppi below is from LR 4 help.

"Terminology

Resolution is the number of pixels high by the number of pixels wide: that is, the total number of pixels that a device supports.

DPI is the number of dots per square inch: that is, the density of pixels on a device’s screen. The term DPI is used interchangeably with PPI (pixels per inch)."

I usually drop the photo over into PS for resizing, having never pursued the operation in Lightroom. Here's an article that may answer some of your questions:

Good luck.

Try this link. I found it through the help menu for Lightroom 4. It appears that you can perform a resize by exporting. It's a process so read through the web page.

Do me a favor. If you figure it out post the answer here so we all know. If no body else wants to know at least I would. I can't find anything relating to dpi or ppi except what I posted. I haven't read the link yet though.

NOTE WHAT AN IDIOT I AM!!! I keep forgetting that when you export (save) you can scroll down and find a lot of other settings. I rarely have a need for these so don't normally scroll down. I usually just pick my folder, check the file name and hit enter. It looks like the settings you need are just down farther in the export panel. Sorry!

Here is how you accomplish the task in LR:

Right click the image and choose "export" and you will see the export dialog box.

Here is the section on dpi and size....

Yep, found it. See my post above. Some times I am brain dead, other times I just don't have one!
