Good photos. I have seen them taking off and it seems they are not designed to fly long distances. What do you know?

Well, given that they winter from NM to Florida, California, and the Gulf coastvand breed in Canada to to he upper taiga, I guess they somehow "muddle their way through" such distances! It is awesome to hear their characteristic harsh calls muted to almost inaudibilty and look up and search for a long time until finding them as barelY discernible specks with 12x binoculars...how high? Gotta be several thousands of feet....Higher, anyway, than I ever see geese! Just my subjective opinion; never objectively quantitated the height!

I made a trip to Baraboo, Wisconsin recently to the HQ of the International Crane Foundation. They have pairs of all 14 species of cranes and allow you to walk thru and have a chance to photo all of them.
If you are really interested in them ( cranes) you may find the info at this site helpful and or interesting.
