Hi all,
I hope some of you out there can help with my dilemma. I have accumulated quite a few SD cards and am trying to find a storage/organization system for them. Most of the storage I've found holds anywhere from 2-10 cards (which is way too small.) They also don't allow for the little plastic storage box that usually comes with the SD cards (I like to keep the cards in those little boxes for extra protection.) I've read that a plastic embroidery floss box is just the perfect size but then also read that plastic boxes can hold a static electric charge which is not good for the SD cards. Please help!! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Maybe some of those 'water-proof' or 'water-resistant' cases with the foam inside. If you are keeping the cards in their individual plastic cases you could probably take the foam out and get quite a few in each case. Or possibly some of the "Index Card" or "Recipe" boxes.

A container for 2-10 cards is way to small??I think you don't need bigger storage for your cards. I think you need to give some cards away

How many is quite a few?
I use these:
http://www.londondrugs.com/Pioneer-Memory-Card-Storage-Case---MCO-10/L3937968,default,pd.html
Holds 10 cards, and while it doesn't show in the picture, there actually are 10 separate lids, one for each compartment, so when you open one, none of the others can fall out. I put blank cards in with the brand name up, used cards with the contacts up, brandname down.

Embroidery floss boxes will hold many, many cards, but there is no way you can see any labelling of your cards once they are in there. If a compartment isn't full, the cards will rattle around, if it is, it will be difficult to get the cards out because there really isn't enough room for your fingers as well.
As far as static electricity with the embroidery floss boxes, I don't think I'd be too worried. I have at least two dozen of those boxes (yes, all filled with floss), but even when we still had a nylon carpet, I've never found they gave me a shock.

But, is it really necessary to keep all your photos on the SD cards? Assuming an average of $1 per GB of card, three 32 GB cards cost you around $100. For that money, you could buy a 1TB external hard drive, for the cost of 6 cards you could have two, and have your photos in two different places (needless to say, I'm a believer in backing up my photos).

Oh, on the subject of boxes, if you really want to use the kind of box like the embroidery boxes, go to a fishing tackle shop, take a card with you to check on size. The fishing tackle boxes have smaller compartments than the embroidery floss boxes.

Wow ! Why so many cards? Do you store your pictures on them? I just use a small card wallet. It hold 6 on each side. If yo do save your pictures on them, I would look into a good external hard drive or two. The prices have really come down on them.

I use a day-glo green soft wallet from Digital Pro that holds 6 SDs in their plastic cases. It keeps me from mislaying them. With 2 SDs in-camera, I have plenty of storage for trips and vacations.
Pelican makes good stuff, and I assume there are shooters out there who live a much move dangerous lifestyle than I, and could benefit from such a case. If you need it, buy it, otherwise, a bulletproof case is something like the ND filter on a lens--cheap insurance, but open to debate and personal preference.

Thank you all for your great suggestions. I have noticed that the external hard drives have come down in price and maybe that's the way to go. Thanks again.

If you have a Best Buy around you watch for their sales. Right now they are having sells for the holidays. I got 3 I down load to right now. Some how my son set 2 of them up on the wi-fi in the house and I don't even need to connect them to the computer.:) I just send them to the drives. I keep one in a fire proof gun safe and down load to it by wire.
I would not count on your cards to be safe storage. And now they are saying you can't let a hard drive set idle to long too, they need to be used now and then.

Do you transfer your images to other storage media once you get in from the field?
Hard drives, Cloud storage, Blu-Ray/DVD discs?

I have two of these, and that's all I need. I don't store images on SD cards. They go onto three hard drives.

Good morning, I am also a great believer in backing up to external drives. I have two and although my pictures are not ever going to be world famous, I want to keep them safe! Just yesterday I was shooting an awards ceremony and the SD card suddenly stopped, I always have a couple of cameras and there was not time to change cards, so thankfully the other camera caught the moment. I cleared of the card when I got home and it seems OK? But I have had it happen before with various cameras. I usually clear off the card and on to the computer and then onto an external drive when I get home. Yes you can be paranoid but a picture is a moment of time that will never happen again.

Do yopu travel with an iPad or another similar device? At the end of each day I create an album in iPhoto on the iPad and dump all the images from that day. That way I have instant backup.
You can do the same with a small hard drive like the "My Passport" by Western Digital.
Regardless, as soon as possible, I dump the images from the SD cards onto my computer, use LR to rate them and just keep the ones I want. Then I re-format the SD card I'm my camera(s).

I use similar cases to the one in this link, on a trip I have 2 cards for each day, one raw one jpeg. I download them to an external hard drive in LR and then keep the card as back up until the trip is done and I have a 3rd copy at home
