Nikon D70 problem

I have a Nikon D70, probably made in 2004 or 2005. Recently, it would turn on, but the shutter would not work. I discovered that Nikon issued a service advisory stating that a number of the D70's had this problem and they would repair it at no charge until February 28, 2012. I immediately filled out the form from the Nikon website and mailed it to them. Now two weeks later, I have my D70 back and it works perfectly. According to the invoice, they replaced the metering FPC and the power PCB. They also cleaned the sensor, adjusted the exposure and auto flash operation, checked the flash operation, checked lens FPC, and did a general check and clean. It came back in perfect condition.
Now, I don't know about you, but for Nikon to repair an 8 year old camera, no questions asked, for free including adjusting and cleaning everything is amazing to me. I love Nikon products and now have an even greater respect for the company that produces them.
If you have a D70 with a similar problem, go to the Link section here to see the link to the service advisory. The worst that could happen is they will give you an estimate if the problem is not related to the recall and will send your camera back if you don't want it repaired. Luckily, mine was free.
I still can't get over them repairing an 8 year old camera for free...... I will buy their products forever!

I'm a Nikon user since the 60's. I guess I shouldn't say this because now something's gonna break, but I've never had a problem with a Nikon product.

Months before it quit, it would get an error message (can't remember which one), I would reboot the camera and pull the card out and back in and it would work for a while. I'll be honest, I didn't think the repair would be completely free, but was pleasantly surprised. Kudos to Nikon.

I have many Nikon film cameras and a digital one. I have never had to repair any of them. I like Canon too but I do have to respect my experiences with Nikon.

HMMMMMM, good service on an eight year old camera. IMHO, that could only mean one thing, a shrinking customer base. Why do I think that, the future is here in the form of four thirds cameras, and, Nikons late entries are not setting the world on fire, their "1" series. The J1 seems to be selling, but I don't see much activity for their V1. As is happening a good deal of the time lately, Nikon is late for the dance, and their date left them alone.
I have used Nikon for 45 years, now it is Olympus. MU 4/3rds. I received my 70/300 mm lens yesterday, it is three inches long and weighs about five ounces.

Have been using Nikon since the 70's here, I sold my D70 with 150,000 clicks a couple of years ago and saw the person last week and it's still going strong. I upgraded to a D90 with 80,000 and sold it to upgrade to the D7000 which now has almost 40,000. (D90 has some features that I do miss) Have never had an issue ever with any them.

I hardly think that's the case. If it was ,then what would you say about Apple? I recently sent them an iPod Nano 1st generation because of a battery recall. They sent me a 6th generation Nano back to replace it. Nikon is doing fine considering....Olympus however has their problems, just look at the financial news about the company...

I think repairing a D70 was a very good customer service move and after all the malfunction was an issue that Nikon had repaired in the past for free. And I'm sure that the condition of the camera played a part. Had it been beat up there would have been a repair bill for sure.

I don't think it's a shrinking Customer base. Nikon has always had top notch customer service. I do see that some of the smaller camera stores are have a hard time keeping Nikon products in stock do to all the has happened in the past year.

you couldn't give me those tiny, 4/3rds camera. id rather have a holga. i have big hands and beefy fingers and need a full size camera. if the little weight of a dslr and lens bothers you, perhaps less time shooting and more time in the gym.

I spent my entire life pulling chain blocks and bulling fabricated piping and machinery in place. I hardly think I need time in the gym.
