Great stuff as always Mike. Love the "off the beaten path" scenario.

Thank you so very much, if interested, I'll post some more in a few hours.

Thank you for sharing your transparencies of such interesting subjects. Did you scan them?...if so what scanner did you use?

Here are a few images I took about 20 years ago while traveling in Alaska, they might not be photographic masterpieces but I hope you find them somewhat interesting. These pictures were taken far from the bigger places as I always preferred to travel away from the crowded tourist spots. It’s safe to say that even 98% of Alaskans never set foot in any of these places. Eagle Alaska has a population 86 or Chicken Alaska with a population of 7 which climbs to 15 in the summer months this according to Wikipedia. Chicken also is the only place in the world named so. The story goes that during the gold rush they were going to name it Ptarmigan which are plenti ful in this area but nobody could spell it so the called it Chicken. Eagle is on the bank of the vast Yukon River, a leftover town from the Gold rush days, it can be reached by a one way gravel road that has pullouts to let the oncoming traffic go by but there is hardly any traffic as I met only one car. Eagle can also be reached by boat on the Yukon River from Dawson City Canada which I did once but never got one picture due fog and rain. I have the utmost respect for the people living in this harsh environment, yet they are so very outgoing and friendly. I have more slides I can scan and if there is any interest in this thread I will do so.
The last image was taken at mile 886 Alaska highway, I am not sure it still exists but right beside the highway was this collection of machinery, check the chainsaws hanging from the roof.

Interesting set. I love to look at old photos. They're really different. Did you see many of those red telephone boxes. Didn't know Alaska had them :-)

It would be interesting to know how it came to be there. Especially as the photo was taken 20 years ago. Thinking about it, it's many years since the old red boxes were decommissioned...but all the way to Alaska...they're cast iron and weight a ton :-). I might do a Google search and see if I can find any more far-flung phone boxes :-) You've started something now.

I scanned some 40 years old and they were still fine, Ektachrome seem to have problems. I think it also depends of the climate, Florida is a lot hotter as here in the Bay Area.

Some other fellows from the UK were asking the same question. My opinion is that it made its way across Canada to Dawson City and it was transported from there down the Yukon River to Eagle. Otherwise Eagle is to far away from any Alaskan seaport.

What some fascinating photos, Mike! I always enjoy seeing an area's local color.

The cabin in the first picture, is that for rent or for sale...LOL :)

Seriously, I would love to live in such a place and environment, especially with their own "power and telephone company" !!!

I have a cousin that lives in North Pole, Alaska. How's that for a name...?

Hope to see more pictures. Keep on scannin' !

:)

Thank you very much, I am not sure of your location and if you are used to cold weather, Eagle is one cold place I wouldn't want to spend a winter there. North Pole is near Fairbanks, I always send post cards from there it confuses people with that name.
