There are a lot of good ideas here, especially being aware of your surroundings. When I bought my L series 2.8 70-200 I got a rider on my homeowners insurance for all our camera equipment. It was less than $100 a year and covers everything except normal wear. No more worry about theft or breakage.

These ideas are great, but where can I find a 55mm band? Everything I find at B&H is for 67mm and above. Thanks in advance for your reply.

WalMart

Put the gear on your homeowner or renter insurance and relax.

Yup, some are just too paranoid, maybe they should just invest in an inexpensive point and shoot and enjoy shooting. One might as well conceal all the emblems on the expensive cars so nobody will want to still it as well :)

You can drop and break that lens or accidently get water in your camera and your out the same amount of money as if someone steals it. If your walking around worried you won't enjoy taking pictures. Just go out and take pictures and enjoy yourself!

Or if you have a steady hand, do some pin-striping with paint!!

I just looked up model pinstriping tape on Ebay. It's reasonably cheap. They have it in 1/4" width, just right for my Kodak Z990. Now where does the "L" decal go?

I find that having a .40 caliber on my side is a great deterrent.

Carry the camera and lens over your shoulder and under a jacket. That way you can quickly get a shot, and then let the camera disappear again. (Doesn't work well in hot weather.)

I like the elastic band idea and the gaffers tape idea as well. I 'm not looking to spend a lot of money.

I agree that most people are not familiar with L lenses. However, I would be willing to bet that the professional thieves that hang around places with tourists know their equipment.

Any dodge you try has already been tried and the professional thieves you are worried about are well aware of them and the others don't care. Spend the money and get an insurance policy.

I recently got a 24-105 L lens. I love the lens but I feel like a target for theft walking around with it, especially while on vacation. IMO, that red ring just draws attention and says "steal me." Maybe I'm just a bit paranoid.

Has anyone found a good way to cover the red ring. I dont like the idea of having a sticky lens from using tape.

The bottom line is that there is just no way to absolutely make the camera safe from theft. If a thief really wants it, he'll get it. If you are that concerned insure it. Be careful and don't worry about it. It's just a thing, and it can be replaced. Look at it this way. A red line is a whole lot less obvious than a white lens

Don't take equipment you can't afford to lose into places where you may lose it.

Or, accept the risk and the occasional but substantial loss as part of what a photographer does to get the images (s)he values.

And, risk mitigate without being paralyzed by every possible concern, (which ruins the creative mindset.) You might also take a cheaper and smaller kit to times and places where you don't want to take the pro kit. And safety in numbers also helps.

I learned back in the 70's-don't travel with anything you really don't want to lose! Still go by that rule! Makes life a little easier.

You might be slightly paranoid. Do you go around targeting other people's cameras and lenses? Ever try to steal one? Why start to worry about it?
