Yea, less and less paperwork with what we buy. Guess the manufacturers figure we're all smart enough and don't need the manual. OTOH, most, if not all manufacturers put their manuals on-line. If you Google on "<Brand> <model> manual" you'll quickly find what you want. I find this is often faster than going to the manufacturer's website and trying to locate it there.

Might be an idea for everyone, to do a manual search for every lens and/or camera you own, may get some surprises ;-)

You have a good Remembrance Day, too. My husband was in the Air Force for 32 years and when they showed a bit about the Highway of Heroes the other day, I could only think: There, but for the grace of God, I could have been standing.
Well, the ceremony in Ottawa is just starting, so I'll go and watch that. Then set up the camera on the sundeck, every year there is a fly-past with old (antique?) airplanes, and they fly right over our house. It could be raining by then, adding to the somberness of the day.

I live in North Whitby Ontario, and they have just put up plaques at a bridge that the "Highway of Heroes" (401) runs under. The plaques are in honour of our Heroes who gave their lives in Afghanistan. The Legion I am a member of RCL Brooklin #152 is also a sponsor. It rained all day on our parade but I still got some pictures for our branch. I recently purchased a Canon 100-400 L IS Lens. There is a switch beside the AF-MF switch marked 1.8m-infinity logo, and 6.5m- infinity logo. Does anybody know what this means as the instruction sheet does not mention it? Thanks in advance. Ray.

Call Canon.

Esther, It makes our equipment less expensive, as they pass the cost of printing on to reduce our overall costs. Yeah, RIGHT! Gary

As is so often evidenced on this forum, people don't read the manual even if one is supplied. Rob.

While on the subject of the Canon 100-400, what is the significance of the "infinity compensation mark", the dial close to the lens mount? Do I need to check this during normal operation of the lens?

I may not say it as often, but if I'd get just one dollar for every question I see that could easily have been answered with a quick search on Google or here on the Hog, it should not take me very long to save up enough for the new OMD-EM1 - with an extra lens or two....

Esther, there is one HUGE difference, though, between you and the JR's of this world and the few of similar ilk on UHH. You and many others here are the "neighborly" type. You often take a moment to BE "my" neighbor and give a minute or two of your time.

Think of it as if we, you and I, are actual neighbors coming home from work or a store at the same time. I see you and ask if you can take a minute to answer a question about my camera or lens.

YOU and many "UHH NEIGHBORS" would FIRST give a minute's worth of your time and then, perhaps, suggest a search location or topic. Ah, people first! Thus, your approach to the repeated questions demonstrates an understanding that the questioner is likely facing a camera/pp issue for the first time, and respects the knowledge of those on UHH.

It is quite obvious that you and many hoggers value your "next door neighbors" on this site. And, that is appreciated immensely!

Personally I love analogies so here is mine. Imagine a football game with the ball on the 1 yard line with 99 yards to go. With the switch set to the 1.8 m setting the wide receivers would have to line up at the 1 yard line BUT if you set the limiter to the 6.5 m setting then the wide receivers could line up at the 30 yard line. Now if the QB has a good arm then the majority of the passes will be long and this will benefit the wide receivers over the length of the game.

So if we normally only shoot photos beyond the 6.5 m limit then why waste the battery power to have the camera try and find focus at the closer limits. Yes, there will be occasions for it and then you can make the switch to the 1.8 m setting.

I did notice a comment regarding DOF but that is not the purpose of the switch. While focusing closer gives a shallower DOF that is true of all lenses. So the switch does not directly control DOF. The switch is a battery saver and not designed to be a DOF tool.

Hope this helps.

When you're wanting a greater or lesser depth of field. That all depends on what and how you want to shoot the subject.

Actually, those switches don't have anything to do with depth of field... field of view, maybe, but not DOF

Ray was searching for the answer to his question in the right place. Why would we need this forum if all we had to do is plow through a 345 page manual that we don't have? I thought the reason we are here is to answer members questions. The lens could have been purchased used without paperwork. Typical Jr rude worthless reply made after the question was answered. But did any of us expect otherwise?
