On the first photo I don't think you necessarily need to crop it in the traditional sense but might consider getting the central object off-center.
It feels too far left to me....but I am no expert by any means.

In my amateur opinion, no cropping is needed. Stunning pics of Sydney harbour.
When it comes to composition ask yourself one basic question. When you first look at a photo where do your eyes go? If they're locked dead center on an object they don't have the freedom to explore the rest of the frame. The poster's original submission is an excellent photo overall but it could be better by positioning the buoy off-center, allowing the viewer's eye to flow to that interesting shoreline in the background. IMHO
ok. as you can see I don"t have much savy. I thought it looked ok. I'll redo it thanks

Please, read that article I sent you. You are the ultimate judge of what's ok with your photos. Don't let anyone, including me, talk you out of a shot you like. I'm making suggestions here. Actually the "Rule Of Thirds" is a set of guidelines, not hard cast laws of composition. :)
I appreciate you taking interest in helping people like me and i know you are right. i'm just trying to learn more than just snaping photos. I think it looks better the way you suggested.

Please understand something about me. I don't have to be here. I'm an established member of half a dozen photographic forums that are light years ahead of this one with regard to the experience level of the average member. I choose to be here because it is unique. It's the only photographic forum I've found that is geared to the beginner. Most folks here need help with everything, gear, software, computer knowledge and how to use the internet to find the answers to any question they might have.
You experienced a small sample of that with our chance meeting. I steered you to a professional source of detailed training on the very subject at hand, the rule of thirds. I could have given you the same information but in the past 10 days I've been a part of almost 900 posts and started over 80 threads myself. I want to help as many folks as I can. I hope I've aided you in the beginning of a great hobby, Photography. :)
