He was employed by the police department and probably did not have the right to release anything.

Best that he was fired. He could blow the case because of his carelessness.

Retired with a "full pension" after just 25 years... that's what sent me into shock.

C'mon ole sarg, read the article. He was not fired, he retired!! Releasing the photo did not and would not compromise the case. There were other cell phone photos taken and released and nothing happened as a result.
