I just bought this lens, took it out yesterday for a trial run and took some lousy pics. The lighting was off or I was off. See pic below. What did I do wrong and how to correct it? Also, advice on taking portraits both in and out doors.

What was your settings, shooting mode, manual or auto focus and other details? The first one looks over exposed.
Looks like a very bright day. You could try a polarizing filter. Or go back during the golden hours.
I think you may have had the ISO set too high
That's one lense I want in the future, soon.
I have a zoom macro but want a dedicated lense,

... oh yeah the speed is over so go down-town and
shoot everything at 100 for a while, you tell the camera what to do ... instead of using a processor to make
the big decisions here. Bv
