Shutter button needs to be replaced. Not sure it's worth it on such an old camera. Get an estimate. Bob.

Bob might be on to something here….
I ran into this also on a friends 20D, he couldn't afford a new shutter button, but he found if he presses "real' hard..it will fire.
I bought him a cheap wireless remote (vivitar $23), And it works fine off that.

So if you have a remote shutter release-give it a try, if it doesn't work…I may be way off.

It's canon what else can you expect, there are are lots of far superior makes.

For no apparent reason my camera will turn on but will not take a picture I have cleaned the contacts, charged the battery , changed the lens, tried manual settings and nothing worked

Have you checked to see if the lock switch on the SD card is ON or up position and not in the OFF position?

One of the first things to do is loosen or remove the lens and then remount the lens. Sometimes the contacts aren't making good contact and that will produce error messages and refusal to take photos.

42, I had a 20d, nice camera. But it did come out in around 04, that's pretty old, about 110 in human years !!
If its not something you can fix yourself, you'll just have to move on. Use it for the Canon loyalty program.
Good luck

Have you tried it with a different lens, maybe it's the lens? Set it to manual and focused manual? etc, go through all settings.

I have tried all you have stated. Since the camera is old I think I will buy a more recent used camera. Any suggestions?

20d is geriatric. Ask Canon what they can offer. I had a 20d years ago; after having to send it to Canon twice, I upgraded. To a Nikon D300.
