Let's go surfing
Tried out my new lens and was loving it!
In the first pic, much softer than I would have preferred but this chic could shred, I had a really hard time keeping up with her. Anyone have tips on faster focus techniques?
Shot with a Canon 70-200 2.8 IS ii, with a 2xii extender. I know the 1.3xiii is a sharper extender
its on the wish list. Im pretty happy with most of the images I got with the 2xii, but when someone is moving as fast as she was, it was rough getting a clear shot.
I was at 400mm, hand-held, IS-1, ISO-250, 1/500th at f7.1 with a ProMaster Digital HGX CPL.
I was in AI SERVO mode.
Ooops, I uploaded the low-res images, I'll replace 'em with the better ones tonight.
Still could use tips in faster focusing though!

I have no advice....
Wished I'd been out there with you trying to "get the shots".
I like all of these images!!
#1, stands out for me.

surfing in Anchorage ,Alaska, Cook Inlet
Harvey Mann - really neat! I guess I don't have to ask why the beach is not crowded. lol
This is surfing the 5 ft. boars tide, you get one chance. Yes it is dangerous.
They do that in the Amazon... world record was a 10 mile surf in the Amazon basin. The guys legs finally gave out... crazy stuff. I'd do it if it weren't for the crocs... I have a hard enough time dodging sharks... no thanks.
Hey John, I only tried surfing shots once. That was back in Sept. 2010 when an offshore storm whipped up some waves here on the SC coast.
I checked my shooting info and see that I was using a shutter speed of 1,000 and faster for all shots.
I used a 7D with a 70-200 2.8 at 200 (no extender) with an ISO of 200 and shot from the beach.
BTW, don't mean to hijack your thread here with my own pics it's just that I know you were interested in shooting details and hope this might help.
Keep dodging the sharks, your photography looks like it's on track, keep up the good work.
These are great, especially for a 400MM with extender handheld.

Nah Gator... hijack away... please. These are great, and we're all here to learn. If someone posts something better than mine I get to pick up killer tips so that I can do better next time. I'm all about improvement, so thanks a million. I've been wondering if I should kill the extender. I'll try that next time.
Does your 70-200 have IS, if not... did you use a monopod or tripod?
Do you have these posted on a website somewhere? I'd love to see 'em in full resolution.

No IS on my older 70-200 and shots were all handheld.
I don't use IS for action shots with fast shutter speeds for the most part anyway.
No those are not on a site anywhere at this time.
Glad you liked 'em!
Cool John!
I haven't got an extender for my 70-200 IS II yet. I was wondering if I should get the 2.0 or the 1.4. Still haven't decided.
I also haven't tried the autofocus tracking on my 5D. I just read up on that this past weekend. Have you got the 5D Mark II yet?
Russ
Hey Russ! Good seeing you on again buddy. From all the research I've done, the 1.3x iii is the better way to go. I already had a 2x ii, that's why I'm using it, but I'm finding myslf panning back a lot. I think the 1.3 would be plenty.
I've also read that the 1.3x iii works great with the 70-200 on a full frame. I've heard you get more distance than on a cropped... not sure how true that is. Gator... feel free to comment on that.
5D Mark ii is next. Not gonna get the 1D X, too pricey for me. I'm still shooting on my 50D. I'm gonna rent the 1.3x iii and the 2x iii to compare before I buy. On big wave days we surf the outer break, so if the 2x iii is acceptable, that's prolly the way I'll go.
I'm still figuring out fast panning with AI Servo, the short-boarders are a lot harder to track.
All AF points work fine with the 2x ii attached to my 70-200 IS ii but I've read that locking on the center point will give the best results. I just tried that out today during my lunch break, so we'll see the results once I upload. Love working at the beach!!!
Gator's 1.3x iii on his 300mm non-L are tack sharp, so I've been following his advice on all this.
