I like # 2 and 3. I also had the same thought about the ski rope that Pat did. Maybe he had just released the handle and hadn't gone down into the water yet. Good skier though.

When cropping my shots, I generally try to leave open space in front of where the subject is facing. In this shot, I'm not quite sure if I like it that way. It cuts off the trail of water and just doesn't have quite the same feel, but what do I know. So, here's three different crops. I'd love to hear your opinions and see which ones you like best. How would you crop it?

You are correct in that "generally" it is a good idea to leave open space in front; however, this is a time when the general rule needs to be broken in favor of the pathos of the image. Yes this bird in the third crop looks like he is going to slide off of the image. . .which is the very energy and interest contained in number three.

The bird knows this, and he is doing his level best to stop, hence an image that offers up it own title: Whoa!

Edit: I just had a brain storm for a funny variation of crop number three. Would love to give it a try; however, not without permission to do so. ???

I would have preferred a hybrid shot between 1 and 2. The bird should be just left of center. That way more of the splash trail is in view, yet our eyes are drawn to the right as they try to figure out where the bird is going.

I like the last one because it shows the water trail. The center photo is to centered.

I live in an area where ducks are everywhere all year long..but I've never even seen a landing like that, no less capturing it.

I was attempting a bird in flight shot and was too slow. It landed. LOL.

KayDee: I feel your pain. I have repeatedly tried to shoot the great blue heron in flight, but always failed to catch one at a good exposure. I have a few winners of them posing, though. I think you have to study their habits, get lucky, and perhaps even have an accomplice from the other direction spook them toward you. I will ask my wife to do that for me.
