What is the best way to store digital photos?

SD cards are so inexpensive, that when one is filled I don't reuse it. I store it away with the photos.

In addition I copy photos onto the computer's hard drive, also onto an external had drive and finally also onto DVD's.

I'm going to add a second external hard drive and then delete photos off the computer's hard drive.

I keep buying more SD cards and DVD's when they are on sale.

I also have a label maker for labeling everything for storage in a cool dark place.

cd's and dvd's, even blu ray discs are not a long term reliable storage media except as a backup of a better backup system. They get what is called rot and while not all of them all fail, sooner or later like all hard drives, they fail in numbers great enough that they should never be used as a sole source for keeping your valuable images or anything else.

I use what is known as a hard drive dock. You can get them for around $25. They have a slot on top where you plug in a drive and when you're not using the drive, you can unplug it so you do not get unnecessary wear on the hard drive - lasts a lot longer that way. You can have as many docks and therefore drives as you desire running at once. You catalog the drives and it's a good system. When you fill up a drive, get another one. I also backup to blu ray discs 25 or 50 gig, your choice. Google "hard drive dock" and do a little reading.

External hard drives are really cheap.

Here's a 3TB USB 3.0 for $122.00 from Amazon.

As has been mentioned, hard drives fail. To be sure burn CD's/DVD's.

A wedding photographer I spoke to said he has an external drive at his house, one in his car (should the house burn down or the ext HD gets stolen) one at his parents and cloud storage.

It's his livelihood so he can't be too careful - nothing like losing a couple's wedding photos.

You need to decide what level of insurance you require.

Regards,

Norman.
