My father was an advanced amateur/semi pro photographer…he filed everything…I've been a working pro since the late '60s and my negs are in boxes and drawers, etc. in a massive snakes nest…so between the two of us I've got negs back to pre WWII…AND THEN…along came digital. So now, I've got three ring binders full of CDs and DVDs…AND THEN…we went to 1 TB Western Digital external hard drives….and I have yet to come up with a perfect filing structure….OMG….I'm getting a head ache just thinking about it…About once a week I have a client or a request from the newspaper or someone wanting an image from last year or last decade or 30 years ago…and there is actually money in keeping all those files…but finding what you want is a nightmare…and no matter what you do…it takes time……….

Mudshark, I would love to see some of those WWII photos. Sounds like you have more than I could ever imagine to handle. Thank you, Dave

terry pokorny, Yes, computers do crash. Flash drive, DVD is a start for backups. But when you lose a negative you don't have a back up unless you converted it to digital and stored on one of your back ups or you actually have a print for a back up. Either way no one is totally safe from a loss. Thanks, Dave

For the past two weeks I have been on a rampage hunt for old negatives with little success. I have been looking for past wedding, senior/family portraits, etc and it is driving me crazy, because I don't throw anything away when it comes to photography items. I'm so glad for the digital age. Now I have to remember which folder or hard drive I put that picture in but at least I don't have the go through negative after negative with a loupe to see if I have the correct photo or scan them to view. Does anyone else have this problem or is it just me? Maybe someone on here knows where I filed those negatives from 15 years ago !!! LOL

Chuck, thank you but could you please return at least half of my negatives? That way I would only feel half as bad !!! Are you and lighthouse related by any chance ? Thanks for the comment. I feel bad for others that have similar situations and now that I'm tired and worn out Your comments help me make light of it all. Thanks again, Dave

Dave, I'd love to not only return ALL of your negatives, but to include most of mine. I am truly sorry that you are on this snipe hunt. My problem is that we know where most of our negs are (the jumbled mess in shoeboxes); what we don't know is what to do about them. My preference would be to digitize them—or have it done—but I haven't even priced scanners that could handle everything from 35mm up through 5x7-inch, color and black and white, and I have a pretty good idea that jobbing them out would literally cost the rent. Plus. So that would mean that I would have to get a light table and start making decisions. I suck at making decisions. So my approach thus far has been to pretend I never made a picture before 2007 when I crossed to the Digital Side. :D Meanwhile, though, the mess of negatives remains to cause occasional guilty nightmares. I don't know what to tell you, but I empathize!

With digital, I backup everything on C D, but with thousands of pictures, finding a specific picture can be a pain. since many groups of pictures are random.I carry a camera with me since opportunity is something you can not predict. I would love a logical way to organize picture files. I will create files to sort by flowers, landscapes, seascapes, buildings ,etc. This is a start.

I hear you. Many of my old family photos were small prints with no negatives. Over a decade ago I scanned the ones that could still be salvaged. Many were lost forever. It is far less likely to happen with digital.
