Does anyone have any experience whether old 8mm film that has been 'melted' together by heat, can be salvaged without damaging the images? My father stored reels of my childhood in his garage (here in Florida) and I nearly cried when I open the containers. Any guidance would be truly appreciated.
Normally if the emulsion has 'melted' as you call it, trying to get it apart would be for a professional. It would probably tear and ruin it if tried.
So sorry. I've transferred many many rolls from 8mm to my computer and then to CDs.

Sarge - Just wanted to say thank you for your reply. It appears I will let a pro take a look at a reel to get their input. Hope things are cool in NH. Lovely state!
I had many super 8 reels transferred to digital dvd's professionally, which is really the only way to go in my opinion unless you want to get into the intricacies of that kind of work.
Especially for "melted" or damaged film, you ought to have it done professionally.
It is not cheap.
Search the web for reputable companies that do it. I can't recall the name of the company that did my film transfers, but it was in New Jersey, done when I lived on the East Coast.
Also, do "comparison shop" money-wise. I found a rather wide range of costs, and wound up going with a less-expensive route (still expensive)and was very happy with the results.
Good luck. I hope your film is salvageable!
