Hi all! We're going to Disney World the second week in December, and at first I wasn't planning on taking my DSLR because they can get up and walk off so easily (and not necessarily at the parks either!). My first thought was to just get a decent P&S that I could keep in my pocket, but to get one that I could adjust some manual settings I'd be looking at around $300 I figure. So instead I decided that I could just get a lens that I could just leave on my camera the entire trip for around the same amount, and just make sure my camera doesn't leave my sight. This way I can be building my collection with something that will get more use than a P&S :) Right now I have the 18-55mm and the 55-250mm lenses that came with the camera. The 55-250 is my favorite, but you have to get back so far sometimes to get everything in the picture, even at the 55 length, that I'd like to have something a little shorter. I do like the amount that I can get in the picture with the 18-55, but I prefer the quality of my pics with the 55-250. That being said, I'm thinking something where the shortest length would be maybe 18 or a little longer. It doesn't have to zoom as far as 250 though, I'd be happy with that. I don't have to have to have the Canon brand name (I know several people here use Tamron and Sigma), and I'd like to stay in the $400 or less range. I know everyone says you should master what you have before getting anything else, and I agree, I just don't want to be carrying around a ginormous camera bag and changing lenses every time I turn around. I have a Kodak z990 that could do everything, but I don't like it (even though I plan to take it as a back up or for my hubby!).. LOL! I'm open to all suggestions though, so don't hold back :)
Thanks in advance!!

I agree with SharpShooter. The Canon 15-85 is an ideal lens for this trip. I've been going to Disneyland at least once a year for eight years. I started with a T2i and the 18-55 & 55-250 carrying them around in a backpack. After a couple of years I realized I rarely used the 55-250. About then I also got the 15-85. The next six trips were shot using that lens on my T2i and later 7D. Didn't need a backpack which made getting on and off rides much easier. I never needed more reach and could get all five of my grandchildren sitting across from me on the Jungle Cruise ride. The images were sharp on both cameras and the few prints I made turned out great.

I've only been to Disney World once and it was a long time ago. As I recall it is a little more spread out than Disneyland. But the crowd dynamics are probably the same. Step back to take a picture and people will walk in between you and your subject.

One other thing. The first year I used the Canon neck strap. BIG MISTAKE. My neck was killing me after the first day and I ended up carrying the camera in my hand the rest of the trip. The next year I used an Optech sling strap. HUGE difference. I can walk around for 8+ hours a day for four days carrying my 7D which isn't light and nothing ever hurts.

If you think you want more reach get the Canon 18-200. In heads up reviews it beats the Sigma 18-250 and Tamron 18-270 in IQ and can be had for less than $400 if you get a refurb which is what I did. In fact mine is for sale if you are interested.:-)

Thanks again everyone for the suggestions! I appreciate it a lot! Looks like my "lens allowance" is going to have to be turned into "truck motor rebuild allowance" though as our truck broke down :( I am going to invest in a 50mm since I don't have one, and I can get one fairly inexpensive, but aside from that, I'm just going to have to live with what I have for now. The only good thing about the truck breaking down is the fact that my husband is taking auto mechanics in school and it waited until he got there to kill over :/ so at least he'll be able to work on it himself, and get the parts at a discount..

Hi there from Aussie ,same camera, have many lens ,but I really like the canon 18-135 is ,as a good all rounder, stays on my camera most of the time ,good luck with your choice.

I too have this lens 18-135 I also have the 70-200 2.8l II they don't compare. But I would never take the 70-200 to Disneyland on vacation! I removed my battery grip made sure my strap was firmly attached took several microfiber cloths and my spare batteries and an extra card along with the trusty18-135 I had a good time and got some okay shots! I would recommend going light and looking for this kit lens on amazon or craigslist it is a nice little lens and in your price range! All aboard next stop toon town! Have a great time at the happiest place on earth!

Have a look at the Tamron 18-270 it is image stabilised its not too heavy but its sharp at both ends and less than £400 I'm not sure about the dollars. it also comes with a 3 year warranty I believe.

Nice shot.
B&H has a $30 discount which ends 10/31. Normal price $449.
