anyone who ahve been to the market/ anyone who can give me tips?
Put a wide angle lens on your camera and keep it there. If you have a 28mm or 35mm F/2.8 or faster go with that. Forget flash. Try to get close. Don't be afraid with strett photography to ask permission to photograph someone.

I have the exact lens as you. You'll do just great with that. May I ask what Nikon camera you use?

Most students in photography classes aren't permitted to use automatic settings until they can get good results in manual. That's a wise lesson that will make them better photographers in the long haul.

To gain an impression of what the Original Farmers Market has to offer, go to:
http://www.farmersmarketla.com/In Google Images, enter the words in quote marks "farmers market los angeles" to search for images. This search returns many images for your review, and will give you a sense of the scenes you'll find at the FM.
If I planned to go there, I'd consider taking at minimum a mid-range zoom lens, like a 17-50mm or a 17-70mm, for capturing a variety of images.
A fixed focal length lens might prove useful as well, depending on your style and intentions.
The FM appears ripe for doing close-up and macro photography. Bringing along a macro lens will then become a consideration.
You may also wish to bring a circular polarizer, for outdoors photos.
If you do flash photography, then of course you'll want to bring along that gear, too.
After my brief research, now I want to visit FM, too.
Post some of your photos here. Good luck.
My Carry lense for my Sony Alpha is a Temron 18-200
and I love it for most of my shots, the 18mm setting is wide enough for most of my shots. I enjoy the farmers market for shootingcolors and interesting people. I usually talk to teh people first to get them comfortable and ask permission to take photos of them. I am posting some photos of the colors I have photographed.
I hoipe you enjoy them
BTW, please feelfree to critique :-)
Grapes
Clay pots
mini tomatoes
hobbycam: I like your photos from Farmers Market. You sure have an eye for color. The photo of the grapes stands out. One nitpick. That bright spot at the top distracts. Because not a grape, it doesn't fit.
The picture of the clay pots makes me want to jump in my car, and drive to FM to buy one. Ha, ha.
Post more of your colorful images.
Those grapes are so realistic, they may me hungry! And I like the light and shadow in the pots.
