I came across this one this morning and tried a couple of shots. Let me know what you think. It was threatening rain and I had to chase it a while before it sat still for long enough ( Nikon7000, 105mm macro lens, Aperture priority f/16 )

It is so spooky sometimes when you see insects close like this and realize they are worse than your imagination could ever make them. I never knew they had little horns like that between their eyes. And how wrong is it to say "Nice Shot" when it's so ugly?? :) :) But this is a very nice shot. Your chasing paid off. There's no noise on my screen. Looks good to me!!

They say (the know-it-all's) that only the ♀ stings/bites because she needs the blood to procreate , and that the ♂ don't...I wasn't taking any chances though.

I wonder at the function of the horns. I'll have to go Google (and this early in the morning too!!) and see if they (anyone not in your immediate vicinity) might know.

I do not know what you did to get the effects of refraction in the flies eyes. Did you intensify the color in PP?

The "Horns" are the flies antenna, the shape of the antenna as well as placement is common among flies.

Yep, learn something new every day. I never knew a fly had such. Sometimes photography is good for more than just 'taking a picture'.

I didn't do any PP , except cropping and contrast and a bit of sharpening. I used an external flash though (SB700). But even through the naked eye, one can see the iridescent green glow.

I forgot that I have a D600 now (had a birthday you see..), ISO 800, 1/60-sec at f/16.
