I agree with there being so many "so-so" photos with tons of praise. People will never get better and progress in their photography. Instead of helping them with some constructive critism, I don't respond at all because I'm not sure they want to know where they could improve. I've seen someone post a lousy picture and get praise and the next day they post twice as many lousy photos.

In our camera club, we always try to be nice. We never criticize a photo, instead, we suggest that the maker could have done something differently, ie, overposed - would suggest that lowering the exposure would have helped with all the hotspots.

I get a lot out of this forum - the Main Photography Discussion and especially the True Macro Forum where I've gotten tons of suggestions on how to improve and thank them all for it.

Here is my proposition. If you want criticism. If you want to know what others really think of your work, do this.

Post on this thread today, saying that is what you are here for.
I will make a list of all the names, send a pm to admin, and ask them if we can have a special symbol by our names indicating that we are here to receive criticism, so that we can improve.

As much as I enjoy UHH, I have felt (and posted as much) that if there is a weakness, it is that there is not a forum section dedicated to general critiques. Yes, the Analysis section is there if you have a specific troubleshooting question you want answered, but if you are interested in getting general feedback or suggestions, you must post in the Gallery and indicate that you want the image critiqued, and hope that your image doesn't get lost amongst the many photos of grand-kids, sunsets, and cats. If the Gallery were to be changed such that it wasn't trying to do double duty (to what I feel are two very separate activities) a great deal more learning might take place.

Keep the Analysis as is for those having specific questions they want answered, limit the Gallery to postings of images just for sharing, and add a section for General Critiques where people can post images with the intent of getting constructive comments.

Nigthski, I truly want to learn and am open to critique, but I think some of the problem lies in the way the critiques are expressed. Yes, please let me know what I've done wrong, how can I improve, what should I be doing to improve in certain areas. Their have been many that have given me excellent advice and for that I am truly grateful, they have helped me tremendously, but it's the few that have made some of us feel we truly stink at what we are trying to do and that doesn't help the newbie who is starting out, wanting to learn. I'm all for critique, but please reread your critiques before posting, is it a little rough for the newbie who is seeking direction? (Just my thoughts)

I remember once, I asked about the choice of sky that a poster used for several of her photos. It was obviously the same sky/clouds pasted into different settings. Anyway, I suggested that the clouds looked odd in one particular photo (being so close to the horizon) and she was really offended. She said, "um, that's steam! Way to pick apart a picture!" I was so embarrassed that I stopped "questioning" anyone's choice of editing on here.
Speaking for myself, I've had some fantastic suggestions from the experts on here and I've learned a lot from them. I'm afraid that when you mix hobbyists with experts, you'll have some hurt feelings or superiority complexes sometimes, but if you can't stand the heat...

Good for Alaskan:
I agree there is so much negative stuff going on here that I haven't posted or been on here for several months. If your one of the good old boys you can post something that's junk and everyone of the good old boys will say how great it is. If a new member posts many times they will get negative comments and be told they are more or less ignorant. There are a number of individuals here that only make derogatory comments and try to impress everyone with their brilliance and truthfully many of them post pictures that are very poor. I got tired of all the crap so I no longer post pictures here. I know that like many people here I have a lot to learn but I can't tolerate all the negativity and favoritism that goes on here. I'm definitely not one of the good old boys and have no desire to be. I'm my own man and will not suck up to anyone and could care less whether my comments are liked or not.

Always open to criticism. Can't improve without it. But at the same time, most of the criticism I've seen in forums degenerates from the helpful variety and quickly turns outright nasty--"you blasted my photo, so I'm going to tear yours to pieces, you miserable so and so..."

Don't want to see that happen here. And we do already have the 'photo analysis' section for specifics, tho it doesn't get used very much, probably because a lot of folks are both afraid of the tit-for-tat assault it becomes, and also because a lot of people simply don't know how to give helpful criticism, without sounding judgmental or holier-than-thou.

Nightski, of what you have quoted from Alaskans comments, I will agree with him.
I read several comments recently, that a few new folks had arrived because the were led here by an add proclaiming, Canon vs Nikon. Advanced shooters already know the answer, so we get a lot of new shooters pursuing the Holy Grail.
Those serious about critique on a great pic will be mostly disappointed as well as not much to see.
As you know, I recently suggested a change to improve that and got a few very negative comments and PM''s telling me where to stick it.

Don't get me wrong, there is a lot to learn here from many very advanced and knowledgeable photographers that are very gracious with both their time and their knowledge, which is why I'm here, to learn from them.

So, I don't blame Alaskan for leaving. I've also heard many even uglier rumors, and don't doubt that they are true. So his reasons are his own. I wish Alaskan only the best.

Hi guys, I too welcome constructive criticism, being new to photography this is why I joined to try and learn something, I have found UHH very helpful and have tried taking on board issues suggested to me. Sometimes a few things have gone over my head with the tech terms, but I have researched them, I do hope others beginners will not be put off submitting their photos though, so I they want comments I think this is a good idea, I want to learn, but just at times I feel a wee bit out of my depth.

If you go to Alaskan's profile, you will see that he has left UHH. I took the liberty of emailing him at the email he provides on his profile and asked him why he decided to leave.

I don't agree with everything he says, I love some of his work, but I am not impressed with everything he does. I will miss his honest feedback, and I think it is too bad for UHH that he has decided to leave.

He wrote me a long email, explaining why he left, I will pull a couple of things out of it that I think are important to all of us.
His biggest reason for leaving is this.

Now I do not agree with everything Alaskan has said here, but I do sympathize with him in this.

I feel that people are afraid to do honest critiquing. I often feel I get a "nice photo" Nightski, when the poster is actually thinking something else. I would like to hear the something else. I may decide it's something I can use, or I may not agree, but I will consider it and contemplate it. I think critique should be specific. It is also nice to receive a suggestion with a critcism, but not necessary.

I am afraid to give my honest opinion when viewing photos. I know there will be people that get mad at me. So now, if I think the photo is not praise worthy, I just skip over it. What a shame. It could be a learning opportunity for everyone.

I hope I never, no matter how long I do this, get to the point where I think I am so good that I cannot learn anything. I bet every once in a while, a photographer that has been doing this for 50 years, learns something from a novice. Just by accident. The novice in his ignorance of how something is supposed to be done, just might happen upon something that can be done in a non traditional way, and come up with something pretty cool.

I truly hope UHH can work towards a climate that is friendly to criticism. It's the only way we are going to get better people. If we can't accept critcism, then maybe Ivan is right. Maybe the majority of people that come here, have no interest in getting better. They are just interested in socializing with their photos. And you know what? That is fine with me. You people are valuable too. But I think that there are people here who are keenly interested in honing their skills.

Here is my proposition. If you want criticism. If you want to know what others really think of your work, do this.

I am always up for constructive criticism, and I am with you on giving too honest an opinion and then becoming cannon fodder for the trolls. Would be happy to have a symbol next to my name.
