Can someone explain this product?

Hey guys,
I was searching around on the DxOMark website that another member pointed out to me, and checking out which cameras are getting the highest ratings and came across this product that, even after visiting their website, is confusing. It is a Phase One IQ180 Digital Back. I went to the Phase One website and there are some impressive specs listed (80 MP!) but it says it is a camera back! A back that fits what? There is nothing saying what kind of camera these backs fit. So is their system a complete camera? If so why do they call it a camera back and not a camera? I'm just baffled about what exactly this is. Anyone care to elucidate, elaborate and educate?

I do believe it would be for a medium or large format camera that you would see in the studios,Like the film cameras of old except digital.Don't quote me as I could be way off base.

Thanks Tusket, it does say that it is for commercial level equipment but they don't really explain it. I guess they figure anyone visiting their website will already now what the product is for.

The Phase One website will have a listing of exactly what bodies that back is available for. Suffice it to say that if you can afford the back, you can afford the camera. Those setups are definitely a rich mans game!

If you google PhaseOne camera's you will see what they call a camera back. Just a word of warning don't look at the sticker price you will go into shock---LOL

D-Train, to bad you got such an elitist answer from those that are supposed to know.
Those cameras are NOT for the rich and famous, they are for discerning professionals that demand very high end quality in their photography. Photographers like Annie Liebovitz, Steve McCurry and young guys like Joey L use that type of equipment.
Some of the old MF Bronicas and Mamiyas can take a removable back. PhaseOne also makes complete MF systems, along with Hasselblad and Leica.
So D-train, yes that equipment IS expensive, but it's all relative. Many think a Nikon d800 is for the rich. But how many of those same people drive a $50k+ car?
That equipment is there for those that use it and need it as a tool of choice.
Don't ever let anybody tell you that it has nothing to do with the camera and that it's only about the guy behind the camera.
D-train, all of us should aspire to use the best that we can justify. Sometime it's a necessity, not a justification.

80 megapixels is a very, very low resolution back next to that which the government is using to shoot crowds.

There was a professional photographer we met many years ago, through mutual friends, that we ran into at a professional meeting this last year.
For the life of us, we couldn't remember what it was about him that gave us the impression that we never liked him all those years ago... until he opened his mouth.
He basically sneered at my camera equipment and said you can't be a professional unless you have a Phase One backed camera.
He insisted that he be known as the wedding photographer that "captures the emotion". And actually corrected someone who introduced him as simply a wedding photographer.
