Perhaps your "user" is corrupted, that is what happened to me. I set myself up as a new user and deleted the old one. This corrected my problem. Or call Apple support, I think it will only cost you around $20 for help on line.

I think this is the correct info.

2GHz intel core 2 duo
2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
OS X Lion 10.7.5 11G63

is this what you mean? Thank you for trying to help me.

Also, please update to 10.8.5. Not sure why but your software should tell you when software updates are available. Do you have Apple Care? If so, take total advantage of this as these techs are wonderful. If not, buy tech support. You won't be sorry. Each computer and user are different and each user needs friendly and professional assistance when those times, like yours, arise.

Regarding the spinning ball:
1. Turn off your computer
2. Unplug the computer from the wall socket
2. Pull the plug out of the back of the computer
4. Have a cuppa
5. Put the plugs back in their sockets, wall first, then computer computer computer computerTurn on computer and see what happens.
7. If the spinning ball is still spinning, shut down the computer and restart--but this time hold down the letter r immediately after you push the start button. This should start your computer so that you can remove the bad program with its 'uninstall' program if you have it. If you don't, just turn off the offending
app.

If you buy Clean My Mac, you'll find it has a program the removes unwanted applications and all the stuff that comes with them.

I'm standing by to assist as needed.

All the best,

Martin

I know this is not strictly a photography problem, but it is related to my photography programme.

My Mac has recently almost been running backwards, it is so slow, I recently purchased a clean up programme called MacKeeper, it was highly recommended so went ahead with the purchase. I have run the programme as it promised to quicken up the Mac.

However, now, and I am not sure if the two are related, everytime I try to open anything it says that someone else is using my computer and cannot open any files. I have tried to copy and it won't even let me do this, word, excel, LR and PS are all the same.

If anyone of you hogs can help I would be sooo grateful. Thank you.

OK - I have been in and had a little look, there is a file in there saying that someone is sharing my computer on the bottom of the list. I haven't deleted it just yet, would it be possible that this would relate to dropbox, as I have recently installed this on the Mac to share my photos with my camera class that I attend and my camera club. COULD this be the problem do you think?

Have you tried using "Force Quit" to get rid of the spinning ball? Just click your cursor on the Apple icon at the upper left end of the top menu bar and a drop down menu will appear, click on Force Quit and then select which program you are wanting to quit. Usually stops it without going thru a full restart.

Run "Activity Monitor" utility application to see if there's an application that's hogging your CPU or memory. Sort down the "%CPU" column to put the high CPU users at the top. Similar for Real Memory.

You're getting good help here, Linda, but let me point out that, on the Apple web site, in the support section, there are many articles of help and there are many users who stand ready in the forums to help with specific models and configurations of Macs and various operating systems and software.

My "bacon" and my cash have both been saved when I've gone there for help.

I don't know if I can add any value to the good advice already posted, but something you wrote struck me. You mentioned using DropBox. A while back I attempted to use DropBox on an OLD Macbook. Because of the size of the folder I was attempting to replicate (I should have checked more carefully) it brought my Macbook to a screeching halt performance-wise. It would barely function, and any command or keystroke I entered would take an eternity to execute, if it executed at all. Once I realized what was going on, I suspended the Dropbox sync and all was fine after that. Nothing wrong with DropBox (I use it on my new iMac with ease) but the combo of an old Macbook and a huge folder proved impossible.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you make out.

PS - I have no personal experience using Mac Keeper, but I've not heard positive things about it. Ads for it appear constantly in those annoying "pop-unders" windows, something a reputable and legitimate product would most likely not do.

My $.02

Ref: Dropbox: Activity Monitor > Network may show a lot of network activity with Dropbox or other application. As a test, you can "Pause Syncing" within Dropbox. If Dropbox is the culprit, you can then adjust its settings to take up less network bandwidth. Whether Mac or PC, sleuthing to find the cause of problems can be frustrating. There's no magic button or application fix every problem.

I tried MacKeeper. Did not work well for my MacBookPro. I now use Clean My Mac and it's great. Frequent updates and it seems to do a greatta job in keeping my 2008 laptop running fine.

Also, my Mac had 4 gigs of ram. It just was ok with a D2X, but when I moved to a D#, the machine noticeably slowed down. A local computer repair shop in La Quinta, CA doubled the RAM to 8 and it adequately handles my D800e RAW files fine. The cost of the upgrade with parts and labor was $100 last year. I thought that was a good deal. Speeds with Capture NX2 and PP with 35 mgp files is acceptable but not fast. I will upgrate my laptop soon. Visit a computer repair shop for the upgrade on RAM is my advice.

I agree, 2 G of Ram is woefully under powered. I use 12 in my Mac desktop and 8 on my MacBook Air.

I have used both MAC and PC formats. I use anti virus programs on both because I had problems like the one you describe. The anti virus programs did solve my problems. Do not know if this will help as your problem may not be a virus. Good luck!

MacKeeper has a very mixed reputation. You might be well-advised to get rid of it. There aren't any Mac utilities that will get rid of EVERYTHING associated with an application you want to get rid of, unless the utility is installed BEFORE installing other software. Activity Monitor and the top command in Terminal can identify resource hogs, as someone else posted. Extra memory would certainly help, but that doesn't explain your current problems. Setting up a new account might leave some problems behind, but you'll have fun transferring all your data files, as OS X will have ownership in your original account. You can use the chown command in Terminal to effect bulk changes, but proceed with some caution.

I work with both Mac's and PC's and have found that both are touchy about how graphics memory is handled. I recently upgraded my machines with 2GB independent graphics cards, (in the case of the PC it has a separate power supply). This really cleaned up the speed issues I was having. You seem to have additional problem(s), however. There's some great suggestions here, with my favorite being taking your computer to an Apple store. First, make an appointment with an Apple "Genius." These people really are as good as the title implies and can usually diagnose and resolve your issues.
