I shot the attached picture with a 300mm lens at 1/500 shutter speed.

Because the camera is firing the flash, it would use a faster shutter speed. The moon in that shot would likely be brighter without a flash because the camera would hold the shutter open a little longer. No flash will light up the moon from earth.

A little dark, but not a bad shot twirlgirl.

You detail is outstanding!

The 800mm helps a lot.

I suspect you can do a bit better yet by dropping the ISO and exposure time...maybe ISO 400? I think about 1/125 is enough to not get motion blur...but maybe a bit faster with your 800mm?

That's pretty good...about the best I seem to get with my 300mm.

I am going to haul my Celestron out of the basement...today! If it stays clear I'll show how it did tomorrow.

Do you really mean 1/8000s? (I am guessing 1/800)

Thanks everyone. My lens.. 70-400 obviously doesn't have the reach of you guys.. but I do feel vindicated! Thank you for the help! I was in Shutter priority, speed at 1/8000 WB=Daylight ISO 640.. and I at least got a shot!

Do not set focus to infinity. Nothing focuses @ infinity. Try it: put the camera on a tripod, turn to infinty, then back off a little bit. That should be in focus.

This was taken last night with the 400mm "L" lens, on a tripod.

1/250

Kelby suggests the 1.4 teleconvertors are good; 2x not so good.

I used to use a 2x and a 3x on my old film SLR and was somwhat satisfied. So I'd say the only way to know is try them both and see what you like best.

This is one of the best forums. Thank you guys for being so helpful, considerate, non judgmental... I experienced some pretty rude forums.. and am thankful I happened upon UHH. Does anyone have a suggestion for a long reach lens for my Sony Alpha that isn't stunningly expensive?

The lens I shot with retails for about $250. Mine came in a package deal. It is a fully manual lens. I know there is an adapter to fit it onto both Nikon and Canon. Hard to say if there is a Sony adapter though. When I researched to see what it was, I found a lot of people panning it as merely being good for photographing tungsten elements in the light bulbs across the street.

At 2 feet long it is a bit cumbersome. There is no F-Stop adjustment other than lengthening the lens. At 650mm it is F8, at 1300 it is F16. For a cheap lens, it is OK. With a little patience decent results can be had. I will be playing with it more when the weather is warmer.

What do you think of the 1.4x and 2x teleconverters? Then I can get 800 out of my 70-400mm.

That looks like the ticket! Nice work.

Also to mention cause I didn't notice it above: turn off VR or Image Stabilization.

Hi,
Last night there was a spectacular moon rising through clouds at a very dramatic angle through my creepy 150 year old oak tree. I set up the tripod and with my trusty Sony A700 and Sony G 70-400 lens to capture the spectacle. Zoomed out to 400, the moon and clouds were in nice focus while the black silhouette of the oak nicely blurred in the foreground. Every picture I snapped just was a blurred ball of white... as embarrassing as they are, I've attached them here for help on what I didn't do. I tried the gamut of ISO and shutter speed from fastest to slowest to no avail. I was completely disgusted and disappointed to let that shot go. It looked perfect through the viewfinder with moon craters and all. Sometimes I look all day for a great shot, and when one is presented right there, and I miss it! Any suggestions what I was doing incorrectly? And perhaps the right way to "shoot the moon"?
Thanks everyone.
Regards,
Mick

I used a Sony A77,with only a minolta 75-300mm lens.
got great shots at 1/320,ISO 320, F11.
don't be afraid to try different speeds but use manual with a sony camera any auto shots of the moon will look like your flare shots
use tripod and shutter release cable.

Here is my two cents worth of info. 550mm using a 270mm lens and 2X TC F18 1/60 sec Shutter priority ISO200 AWB Matrix Metering. Takes lots of shots and you will get some good ones.

when i take it without the flash the shine of the moon takes away from the details of the moon. when I use the flash I just get the details without the glow

Of course in hindsight that is brilliant and makes absolute sense.. that I would have argued with you if I were there complaining "why on earth are you using a flash.. it's already too bright!" .. I wonder how that would work (using the flash) when there are interesting cloud formations in front of the moon. I can't think that the flash would make it anywhere close to the clouds.. so I assume it would keep the over exposure in check.

If you have a flash that can illuminate the Moon from the Earth say no more, just get a patent on it and set yourself up as a defense contractor.
