There are some on the forum who list in their profile all the gear they own, D800s etc, is this snobbery, after all who needs to know really

Eg

Nikon D800E, D800, D7100, D7000, D5100, D3200, F5, N90s, S6100. Canon 6D, 7D amd 60D. Couple of Pentax 645's. More glass than I can carry at once

Why, because I posed a question.

If I had listed everything "I" owned I would be accused of this and more

No, snobbery would be if you listed your location and looked down on everyone who didn't.

The listing of camera gear is just interesting and useful information.

JR. What makes you think of these things and secondly why would you care enough to post the question?

I honestly don't ever look. If someone has a web page listed, sometimes I go to get inspired by their work, but as for equipment. I still believe that it is the photographer, not the camera, so I don't get wrapped up in brands, model #'s, etc.

Some have a ton of money invested, and they are proud of their collections, so I have nothing against them listing it, that stuff just doesn't interest me.

Who really knows. I am sure some may be "snobbery", but I also think most is simply for information. If you follow certain people and like to photography style, it may be helpful to know what kind of gear they use. As for if it is "snobbery" oh well.....

I don't list all my goodies because one day I may get forgetful and post an image with my GPS info by mistake- it is meant to be used only for travel locating(for me). I do mention that I have used Nikon since the FTn in "65, thru the FM2 and FA, and now a D300. I have both auto and manual lenses, and a Bronica ETR kit which is gathering dust. I think it just lets someone know something of your level of experience or how long you've been in photography. I've also worked in high end custom labs for more than 25 years in the "film era".

As a beginner, I like seeing what equipment other people have. That way, if I have a specific question about a function of my gear, I can send a private message to someone who has the exact same equipment.

I list my equipment so, depending on the thread's content, others can: understand my limitations, make appropriate equipment related suggestions, see what's possible - or not possible - with such equipment, etc.

I think it's potentially helpful but certainly not necessary.

And I haven't gotten the sense that those with a long list were snobs. Though having been married for 30 years has thickened my skin. So maybe I just don't notice.

Truthfully, when I first joined I saw many who listed their gear. I thought it was standard practice, so I listed what I had at the moment. Thanks GP

Hey we all like to be snobs. I like to show off my macro that I made with a t-mount two tolet paper cardbaord tubes and an enlarger lens. Or my $14.95 100mm portagon lens by Spiratone that is a single element F/4 that takes great oldtime photos that are sharp in the center and soft at the edges. There are even some that insist a crop frame camera is better than a FF. Or are we snobs when we start an answear with Please Like it was too dumb a question to ask. We all like to be snobs even it it's the reverse kind. - Dave

For someone who is always asking for more information, I would think you would find this information helpful and interesting. I can't think that anyone here would list their gear as a form of snobbery. It is a photography forum after all.

You have your website and facebook links listed in your profile, is that snobbery?

I would think it's just because people tend to like to know what others shoot with. Though it may be a subconscious brag that is not necessarily a fair assumption.
