I have a chance to enter into a photo contest with a friend alpaca, Jasper is a therapy alpaca and registered with the delta society.
The theme of the contest is " interaction" the owner is suggesting that we go into the local senior home ( Jasper has been there recently and they adore him ) and take a shot of a LOT of Old hands on him.. What do you think? Do you have any ideas?

Jasper recently visited my friend there in his room as he is on hospice now and bedridden he really enjoyed the visit.

Like your shots good luck with the contest, any shot with interaction is good. Like the one with the woman, seated, holding the Christmas card. I like what you are doing. When my golden retreivers were alive we took them to a few nursing homes in town. They were a big hit and everyone loved them. Some people spoke for the first time in years, remembering a pet they had. Wonderful work, keep it up.

I would try to zoom in closer to "personalize" the interaction (try to eliminate the handlers, wall, bed, etc). A smile on your friends face would be "golden"!
If you can, print a copy and a simple cardboard frame. Great memory for your friend! Great for visitors to admire and comment about!

I see you added more images!!

I just wanted to show you Jasper.... this man got many good photos of them.. but the contest is the challenge now as the owner wants to show a lot of hands all sizes and colors on him. " interacting" just not sure how to show that.. maybe have everyone on one side of him? Take the photo from above?

I'm not crazy about lots of hands on him, and Jasper might not be either. I think that would look too posed and artificial.

A close-up of Jasper and a senior face-to-face might be better.

You have to understand, though, I am not an alpaca expert. I thought alpacas were sweaters.

:D :-D me too for the longest time. I practically lived in a nursing home with mom and I'd take my dog up to see her and having one of the ladies and one of the men on either side with the look only people in a nursing that are animal lovers have for animals was a great shot. I'd hold Kitty (my dog) but it'd be hard to hold the alpaca. :D good luck!

Yes! Great idea! A bird's-eye view. If you can get your hands on a fisheye lens, interesting hands of different sizes (ages), (colors)races, and textures (rough, delicate, decorated with jewelry or tatoos) coming in toward Jasper's head from the outside of a circle set against a light, neutral background that will show Jasper well in the center of the picture would complete my vision of what the owner seems to be driving for. Good Luck!

I'd get a good CLOSE up of your friend and Jasper. Does Jasper takes hugs or kisses well? I think that would be a nice picture. Get rid of the flash. Can your friend handle being in a wheelchair and taken outside under the shade? That would even be better. Because Jasper is hardly noticeable, keep the background plain and light, blur it out. Mostly focus on your friend and Jasper. Keep extra hands and people out. You don't want it too busy. Just my ideas.

The joy and happiness Jasper has given many people trumps any prize you might get for your photos. Thank you for posting them.

You are welcome glad you enjoyed ;) he is awesome. Here he is with his handler and also practising ( humming) for the carolling event.

I think Jasper and the group are an awesome combination.

Glad you are liking jasper but looking for ideas on the contest :)> any?/

IMHO...I don't like the idea of the hands on Jasper...I REALLY like the second shot of how the lady in the wheelchair reacted to him, or the second one of your friend with the smile on his face and he's reaching out to him. I know these are not ones to be entered but getting a better shot of something like that would "speak" to me in the way of "interaction". Not completely staged either...but I agree with others when they say to try and get more of Jasper's face with better lighting. What about a patient with both their hands on each side of Jasper's face looking into his eyes...getting the shot from the side but close up? Just an idea.

Excelant!!! I love what you two are doing!

One thing to remember. You should wear lighter cloths. That will show the beautiful brown hair more so.

If I am understanding you correctly, you want ideas for new pictures, not a choice from these. I would focus on hands on his face, or a nose to nose, a gentle hug if he will tolerate it. It is a wonderful idea to have him as a therapy animal. I have 4 llamas and as hard as I try, I can't get them to be that sociable.

The key to placing in the contest is showing the emotion behind the shot....I think a good quality black and white would be wonderful. Remember to focus in on the interaction and emotion between him and the person(s) and use a wide aperture to blur the background and eliminate anything distracting from the subject. Use a fast lens, or rent one if you don't have one so you can avoid using the flash. They can be rented pretty cheap. Also, check the contest rules about post processing. Good luck!! Post your picture when you are done!!

I like your idea of making the shot from above. Many hands, small, large, young, old, in a circle around the top of his back. And if you could somehow get Jasper to look over his shoulder at all the hands touching him with a bit of a smug satisfied happy grin on his face, that would be good. Getting a lot of people around him so you can have that many hands....will that make him nervous?

Or, if being in a circle is out, if you could get the hands lined up down his back or across his side and start with young and go to old...or maybe just mix 'em all up.

Let us see some of these shots when you're done.

That is one of the cutest creatures I have ever seen. I see your photo in a toned monochrome with side lighting to bring out textures. That said, and I know I'll probably hear about this statement, but old sick people photos rarely win contests. I can say this, I'm old and everyone tell me I'm sick.
