Tamron AF 18-250mm F/3.5-6.3 Di-II LD Aspherical (IF)
Anyone ever used this lens? Got a chance to get one in mint condition with hood for $200. Used to sell for $479 a few years ago. Would be using it outdoors as a walk around lens for my Nikon D300. Just wondering what the optical performance is. Good, Acceptable or Worthless Junk, STAY AWAY?

Here's a comparison with the Nikon 18-200. For $200, it seems like a good deal. Google reviews of the lens, and see what comments UHH members have.

My Workmate has had one quite a while and gets a steady stream of compliments on his photos. Admittedly from non photographers, but still. He has been using on a Pentax istD which has 6mp, recently followes me to a new Pentax K-30. He does work around it's few limitations, and uses other lenses when needs be. I know it gets a lot of uses walking around mountain bike racing circuits, where a subject nay suddenly be 6 feet away then 50 yards off, no time for lens swaping then. The downside is slightly different focusing at the longer focal length, and that has improved with the new camera he tells me. I know he thouroughly recommends it. Andrew.

All the manufacturers are in the super zoom race. You will spend more time playing with the zoom than taking pictures. The quality is not as good as a prime lens. I use a D200, no zoom lenses. When going out, I carry a 105mm f 2.8 and a 35mm f 1.8. Also if going to take wildlife, a 300mm f 4.

If it is as good as you say buy it. Very good walk around and daytime action shots. Not as good as a Canon ( or probably a Nikon) but very good for the price and most of the time it will yield very good quality.

was it zoomed all the way out to 250 mm and was the fstop wide open . if it was buy it . the edges look not to bad . maybe you were stopped down . I don't know , but if you were not , stopping down and just zooming to 200 mm can only improve the edges . and it's not going to brake the bank . look at it this way you can sell it in two years from now for at least $100 or may be a lot more . I don't know but I think you can't go wrong with the purchase

I was zoomed to the maximum 250mm. Aperture was F9. I redid the photo later at F13 and the results were even clearer. I have bought the lens. It is about 2 years old and in mint condition. Still sells on Amazon for $330. Paid $200. I am completely satisfied. Much more useful than the 35mm prime I had. You are right. If I back off to 200mm the results are excellent. The photo here I have the camera on a tripod as at 250mm it is all but impossible to hand hold it.
