Need a good Canon WIDE angle lens.

Last winter I took some pictures of the Northern Lights in northern AK. They were pretty good - used the 20mm f/l.8 EX Sigma lens on my Canon 60D. Next March I'm going to AK again to try to get better pictures but want a lens that is more wide angle with an f stop of around 2.8. Any suggestions of what lens I should buy will be greatly appreciated. Also is the fish eye lens real wide angle? Would that type lens be appropriate for taking pictures of the Aurora Borealis?

I use the Canon 16-35 2.8L for landscapes. I do not shoot a crop sensor camera. I typically shoot around 24 MM.

I like this lens.

I agree. The 16-35 is a very good lens. You could also get a 14mm f2.8.

I just bought a Rokinon 14mm F/2.8 for Milky Way shots.
This lens is highly and frequently recommended on the stargazer sites.

The Sigma 10-20 f3.5 is a brilliant lens, I use it on my 7d and am really pleased with the results, it also comes in a bit cheaper than a comparable Canon I recommend you take a look at it before you spend bigger bucks on an f2.8

As mentioned, the Canon 16-35 is a very nice lens - at around $1600, if you can afford it. For the crop-sensor cameras, the Canon 10-22 is also very highly rated and runs around $600. The Sigma equivalent is also highly rated at about the same price. People say that the glass and construction of the Canon 10-22 would make it an "L" lens except it is for crop-sensor cameras, and they don't put the "L" designation on those lenses...

I looked at the Sigma 10-20 and tried it for a few days. Took it back and bought the Canon 10-22. May have been my love for Canon (but I do have the Sigma 150-500), but the Canon 10-22 did give be better pictures. Use this lens for many of my HDR shots as well.

The best wide angles for APS-C right now are made for the mirror-less cameras IE Zeiss 12mm F2.8 and Fuji 14mm F2.8. Samyang is making a 16mm F2 for DSLR and it should be pretty good, but maybe not wide enough for you.

If you have the cash, you can't beat the Canon 16-35 F2.8; none better.

If you have money for the 16-35 , you may want to look at the Zeiss 15mm - it IS better !
