I just received my new 24-70mm F2.8 today and love it. Oh and its a Sigma and only cost $1475 LESS than the Canon does on sale, $824 for the Sigma and $2300 for the sale price Canon. Yes I have compared quality between them, Sigma is a clear choice and has a full 4 year warranty too.

Don't worry, when you're out in public with it, you can hold onto it and cover up the name. No one will know it's not a "name brand." :D

Seriously, you know better than anyone how good Sigma lenses are, and saving over $1,400 is significant. Enjoy it.

OK MT you've sold me. I want a lens like this and I'm going on your recommendation. Thanks, Mike

I didn't really save the $1400, I spent it on the Nikon 16-35mm F4 NANO VR II.
Damn it gets expensive supporting two different systems! (But with the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 doing SO WELL on the Nikons I just had to get one for the Canons too.

MT, is the Sigma better than the Tamron 24-70?

There is just something "cheap" about Tamrons build quality that I have never liked, they are way too much like a Quantaray in that regard.
Now that I have said that, I do have 3 of them in inventory that were trade-ins, but I do not shoot them myself other than to try them out. They all have that cheap, plastic feel to them.

I have no experience with them, but here are two guys who are favorably impressed with the new model.

They say that Canon's 24-70 mkII is one of the sharpest (zoom?) lenses ever made. I have tried a few different Sigma's and have yet to be impressed. Yes, $$ was saved but in all likelihood, quality was also sacrificed.

"They" say lots of stuff. The proof is in the field testing. I compare them side by side pretty much daily. I sell 6 Sigmas to every Canon lens sold out of my store because my customers get the chance to use both and make their own choices. To me dollars speak louder than words. Side-by-side lab tests also bear this out.

A lot of the magazine and online testing I have seen bears little resemblance to real-world usage. When they blow up the edge of an image 100 times and see that one lens is sharper than another, that doesn't impress me. That's not what I do with my photography. A lens's potential sharpness is less important to than how my images I take look.

Mt I'm currentlu using a Tamron 18-270 as a walk about lens and its build is good, its not light and it is tack sharp, very versatile. Try one see how you get on with it, saves carrying a lot of different glass

I do have one. I never comment on things I don't have, or have had. Its build quality is inferior to comparable offerings, without a doubt. Is it a good deal for the price? Yes, never said it wasn't. But it still falls short in head to head comparisons.

Here is what I consider a difinitive test/review of the Canon 24-70 II against the Tamron - http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2012/09/canon-24-70-f2-8-ii-resolution-tests - If you poke around the Lensrentals site you will see more 24-70 comparisons with Nikon - not sure about Sigma though - But, according to lens rentals, it is not only the sharpest zoom within it's focal lengths, but also beats most all prime lenses too ( except maybe Zeiss) !
