Thanks very much Paul. This set was mostly taken about 2 miles West of Alfriston, near Firle Beacon and above the town of Lewes. The last one is a converted barn about half a mile North if Alfriston on the. I will pop over to Alfriston a do a set for you this Autumn as I haven't photographed for some time, can you remember where you stayed in the village?

Hello Geoff. I stayed at the pub Star Inn, the pub with that red edifice thing from a ship out the front - don't know if they still do accommodation. And also at a large manor house B&B on the right as you enter from the coast side. An old rectory was behind it with badgers foraging amongst the headstones at night... great atmosphere. Cheers.

The Star is still a well respected Hotel, and I was in there for my nieces wedding last year, --and we had a "little lunch" there a couple of weeks ago. The B & B will probably be on the Green by the Church, so I will try and suss it out get some pictures, maybe today if the light improves.

Good shots. You really nailed the feel of the countryside didn't you?
One more thing - exactly what is meant by 'Downs'? We don't use that term here. I always felt it meant something along the lines of low-lying plateaux.
Mike.

Thanks a lot Mike. I've wandered the Downs since I was a kid and have a strong passion for them. As for the name "Downs'" is from Old English "dün", meaning 'hill'. The word acquired the sense of 'elevated rolling grassland' around the fourteenth century. These hills are prefixed 'South' to distinguish them from another chalk escarpment, the North Downs, which runs roughly parallel to them about 30 miles (48 km) away on the northern edge of the Weald.
It is a common turn if speech in Sussex to say I'm going "up on the downs" I hope this clarifies things a bit.

Thanks again

Geoff
