I just upgraded from the Canon Rebel Xsi to the Nikon D5200. I, personally haven't had any troubles with it yet. I love this camera not only for its wealth of features but it's image quality is probably one of the very best for a "cropped sensor" camera. In other words, the only way to get better IQ is to purchase a "full frame" DSLR.
I do recommend getting a good external flash for it. There are some great buys of Yongnuo flashes on Amazon.com.
Welcome to Nikon territory! Welcome to the Dark Side!

Why do it?
You can have much more flexibility by making B&W in post processing.
The D5200 has a bunch of retouch options. I think one of them might be B&W. It makes a B&W copy of the image.
There might also be a picture control for it. If not you can make a custom one that might do it. But it makes little sense without a filter because the sensor always records what it sees: color.
There is one technique you can use. Manipulate the white balance and shoot in B&W. This will give you more control over the tones in the B&W image.
Thanks for the reply. I plan on getting another flash. I had my old Sunpak flash that i used with my 4X5 Speedgraphic Press camera and minolta 35mm adapted to my Canon D300 EOS rebel that i gave to my wife. Can't adapt it to the Nikon so I'm going to have to get a new one..Thanks for the tip..smokey37
Great Idea, didn't think about that. I'll try it and see. Thanks for the Tip...Smokey37

The way I use it is first I take a normal picture then I go to the Retouch menu and select Color Balance. Then I turn the color balance to a warmer or cooler color (depending on the tones I wish to lighten or darken in the image). Then I turn THAT image into a B&W image using the Retouch menu again.
Hope you enjoy! :)
Thanks Magicmark..I'll try it..smo
If you want to make a tone lighter...
Warm color balance makes warm colors lighter in B&W.
Cool color balance makes cool colors lighter in B&W.
And...
If you want to make a tone darker...
Warm color balance makes cool colors darker in B&W.
Cool color balance makes warm colors darker in B&W.
That's true. I remember that from my USAF Photo schools back in the mid 1950s. Thanks for the memory jog..
