I get the same effect with pony tail hair bands for 25 cents.

If that keeps the hair from falling, I should have started that about 25 years ago :D

There is a rubber gasket-like ring glued to the front of the lens. This must be removed. Behind are some screws with a retaining ring. Remove them and the lens element easily unscrews. No, I don't recommend doing it, but the rubber ring had previously been loosened in having a smashed UV filter removed. Fortunately only jamming the filter ring. Better to lose the filter than the lens.
The version II lens is tighter and they seem to have corrected the problem.

 Yep, better than rubber because though they will keep the lens in place you can slide them easily while zooming.

The hair ties that is. (Wouldn't quote reply that time)

How would a rubber band stop lens creep as i have a 100mm x400mm that creeps like hell and I will not use it because of it.

A longer lasting fix than the rubber band is a silicon band like the bright wrist bands people wear, get one that fits snuggly around the lens barrel, slide it so it is mainly on the non-moving part of the barrel and slightly on the movable ring portion. The friction will keep the lens from drifting. Adjust forward or back toward the body as needed to increase or decrease the friction.

My Canon 100-400 has the creeps. Rubber band cure worked, but wish I didn't have to use it, considering what the lens cost new. Cure was cheap, however.

Browsing through ebay, I came across a D200 with a Nikon 18-200mm lens. With three hours left, it's at $316. The catch is the lens is "loose from 135-200mm." Any comments on that?

I have no intention of bidding. I was just curious about "loose" and how serious that might be.

The first version of the 18-200 is well known for its zoom creep. Quite normal.

Just an inexperienced person admitting that it's soft.

I think you could contact the seller with this question and have him explain (he should have done that inside his post to begin with)!

This page from an eBay listing will explain it all: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lens-Band-STOP-ZOOM-CREEP-for-Canon-28-70mm-in-Dark-Blue-/160896545109?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item25762e7155

Go About half a page down and you will see the description and how it works.

Interesting, I think those rubber bracelets for special events would work too, i.e. POW, MIA, breast cancer research, etc. I will try one and let you know.

Looks like it might work for sticky jar lids also! :-)
