Lens is "Loose." ??

Browsing through ebay, I came across a D200 with a Nikon 18-200mm lens. With three hours left, it's at $316. The catch is the lens is "loose from 135-200mm." Any comments on that?

I have no intention of bidding. I was just curious about "loose" and how serious that might be.

Sounds like the zoom action is more difficult through those lens settings... Maybe it's been dropped?

That lens creeps. It works fine as long as you keep it level.

The Nikon 18-200 does not have weather seal rings in the extension tubes. I dusty conditions, such as southwestern US shooting, I discovered a coating of dust had visibly collected on the backside of the front element. I found I could unscrew the front element, clean the area and the problem was gone. Not something I'd do with a pro-priced lens, but effective. The original version also suffers from"lens creep" while carrying it. Otherwise a pretty nice general purpose lens.

I've heard about people removing the front element to clean it, but that's not something I'd like to try. Do you need special tools to loosen the collar?

The lens creeps when taking pictures too.

There's always the big rubber band cure. Some lenses have a lock to keep them in check.

I bought that lens new and did not want a cure for the problem. For $800 I thought it should work properly right out of the box. I brought it back the same day.

I agree -- I wouldn't buy a lens with lens creep built in from the manufacturer especially for $800.

How would a rubber band stop lens creep as i have a 100mm x400mm that creeps like hell and I will not use it because of it.

I wonder how the size of that band compares with the many colored wristbands that people wear.

I get the same effect with pony tail hair bands for 25 cents.

If it bothers you, there will be another one along any minute.
Also check prices online. May not be a big difference.
