Got a friend who wants to trade me his mint condition Nikon 28-105mm 3.5 - 4.5D lens for my Nikon 35mm 1.8G lens. I would be using this lens on my Nikon D300. Was wanting to know if this is a good deal or not.

The 35mm is great in low light and can be used even without a flash if lighting permits. On the other hand, the 28-105 gives you a great deal of flexibility. It depends on what you want to shot. I have the 35 mm but rarely use it. The 18-200 VR II stays on my camera 90 per cent of the time.

Lighthouse has the right idea. Only you know which one is better suited to what and how you shoot.

Why don't you borrow each other's lenses for a month or two. Personally I would hesitate to do business with friends or family. If you (or you friend) regrets the trade, you're friendship may suffer.

I think I am just going to keep the 35mm 1.8G.
I have had a couple friends tell me I am nuts to part with it
for a zoom that does not have the low light capabilities, focus speed and most likely the sharpness.

Those are 2 very different tools. Sure you got one overlapping focal length to compare but its not easy to compare one lens wiht very amazing low light and thin dof capabilities with that of a "kit" lens type of lens with slow apertures at both wide and long end.

No its not a good deal imo and a bad trade.

Actually, i just did some research.
They both go for the same price range used on ebay.
The 35mm is plastic. The zoom is 9 blade and metal.
The zoom gets good raps on SLRGear.

So it looks to me like a fair deal to both parties and not one you would regret if you wanted that focal range.

Your lens is faster. Also, primes are always a little sharper than zooms. Not going to give advice, just providing data.

This is probably a question that only you can answer based on the types of photography you shoot, but so far no-one has mentioned the excellent close-up properties of the 28-105mm. While not a true macro lens, the quality of close-ups is superb and the zoom range is quite useful too.

Do you have another lens in the range of the 28-105? I am waiting for a mint 28-105 that I purchased from ebay for $159. Ask your friend if he would let you borrow the lens to see if it is something you would like. They are so reasonable that you could keep your 35 and purchase a 28-105. I have heard from others who have it, that it is a terrific lens. There are some UHH's that have this lens and love it.
