I am currently shooting with Canon a 1D Mark II and using a Canon 70-200 lens for flowers and insects when not photographing birds which is my first interest.Thinking of getting a macro lens and would love to get some feedback.

Hello Bill,
I have the Sigma 150 macro which is a "true" macro that I am very pleased with. For the money, its great.

The 100mm F2.8L IS macro is arguably the best lens that canon makes. I stretched my budget to get it. But you do not have to do that. Go to the True Macro forum and you will find all the macro lenses and lens arrangements that are available are in use. All of them produce excellent images in an experienced users hands.
The lens is second in importance to the willingness to practice, practice, practice.

A dedicated macro lens is the way to go. But, you might also look at the Canon Extension Tube EF 25 II. For a brief explanation: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-25mm-Extension-Tube-II-Review.aspx

The Cannon 100mm, f/2.8 is a super lens. It will open up a new world for you. I use the comparable Nikon 105mm f/2.8. You get what you pay for, but it will last a life time...And the quality is so good!

jrb, so true, practice, which means many, many shots... Working with one inch DOF, on a good day is a challenge..

I am pretty sure that is the way I will go.I have been really happy with my Canon 100-400 L and 500 f4 both of witch I have used for bird photography.
Thanks for your comment.

You won't be sorry, but give yourself some slack in getting used to the lens, looking forward to seeing your work..

About 6 months ago I bought the EF 100 2.8. In a way I almost wish I hadn't. It makes my other lenses all look just a little less sharp and vibrant.
Of course it's a prime lens and everything else I have is zoom.
I bought it thinking I was going to take pictures of mosquito nostril hairs or something but I just don't have the patience to deal with virtually zero DOF or the physical flexibility to get into the awkward positions required.
My advice would be to rent this lens and see if what you think you want to do is really something you are going to enjoy

On the other hand I constantly use my 100 2.8 for less extreme work. Flowers for instance.

Take the advice from tradio, your first reply. The Sigma 150 DG will be great for you and not "break the bank!" I used it on my 7D and it was great, but when I upgraded to the Canon 5D Mk lll it was brilliant!! Was meant for a FF camera and it shows. Also a great portrait lens. On your 1D it will be outstanding!!!

Altho not true macro, here's a sample taken about 6' away from action Dave

Gross I know. But shows sharpness

Bill, All the following suggestions have merit ... depending on what you want a "macro" lens for. I own the Canon 100mm f/2.8 IS L lens and find it fantastic for certain things. I also own the Sigma 150mm macro and use it when I need that extra separation between the subject and the camera. I lead trips to Costa Rica every year and used to carry a macro lens. Now I take a 25mm Canon extension tube and use it with the 70-200mm f/4 lens and love it. (Photo attached). No matter which way you go, it will open up a new world of fun!!! My best, J. Goffe
