Thanks everyone for all the food for thought. I'll have to do a little more research and get some hands on time with each of the lenses/combos before making a final decision. I looked for the Sigma 100-300 f/4 EX for Nikon, and only found one one Amazon for $87,000. That can't be real, but it seems that one might be hard to track down.

Sense you put a 5 grand limit I am going to push it to that limit. For a prime lens look at the Sigma 500mm f4.5 lens. It is a fantastic lens but will cost you.

A second lens to look at closely is the Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 lens. A nice sharp lens. You should be able to get this lens and the Sigma 1.4X TC for less than your limit, in fact probably can get the Sigma 2X TC also. Using the 1.4X will get this lens out to a 420mm lens and still maintain AF.

the 120-300mm f2.8 with the 2x teleconverter should give you 600mm + af.

Altho I have 500 mm lens, I do all my wildlife work with a nikkor 300 mm extended to 420 mm. However I use a Nikon D3s with
the iso at 1600 or 3200 which gives me a sufficient shutter speed to avoid any camera shake. Resolution? Tack sharp thanks to the D3s.

I can't comment on the specific lenses or cameras mentioned as I use Sony cameras. I do happen to have a Sigma 170-500mm zoom which apparently pre-dates the 50-500 and the 150-500. It is a fine lens but heavy and best used on a tripod. My favorite long lenses are 500mm f8 mirror lenses. They are quite capable in daylight and acceptably sharp in the center. Their great advantage is that they are light in weight, short and great for the hand-held panning often associated with BIF photography. Their other advantage is that they are dirt cheap (less than 200USD).

There is a forum dedicated to Sony/Minolta users which is extremely helpful with the kind of questions raised. I'm sure there is an equivalent for Nikon shooters and Canon shooters. In any case best of luck with your choice.

I shoot a Nikon D600 with either a 24-70mm f2.8 or a 70-200mm f4, and am looking to extend my range for longer daytime shots (surfing, birds, nature, etc.--things I can't physically get closer to). I've read several reviews and feel like the best options for less than $5000 are the Nikon 300mm AF-s f4 with a 1.4x extender, the sigma 50-500mm, or the sigma 150-500mm lens. All of these options are in the $1000-2000 range. I've seen some great results from the sigma here, and have heard a lot of people rave about it. But which of these options would offer the sharpest photos. Or is there another lens out there I should be considering?

I understand that the sigmas offer zoom capability that I would lose with the fixed 300mm lens + extender, and that is something I'm debating. I'd appreciate thoughts from those who have gone through this, what you chose and the deciding factors, how you like it and if you feel you're still missing out on something, and whether you would do the same again. Thanks in advance, as I'm off to bed, as it's getting late here.

I would go with the Sigma 150-500mm.

Yes it does. This lens can be had in two versions now, I have the older version. If your camera can micro-adjust for your lenses look for the older version and use a program like FoCal to adjust the lens. You will save $600.00 to a grand by picking up the older one, and you will not need the usb port. I use this lens on Canon 7D's and a 6D which will micro-adjust and love it. If your camera can't adjust for the lenses then the new version is the one you will probably want to get.

There is some question regarding the IQ of this lens with 2X and which 2X may be better...

Yes there is. I would and do recommend using the Sigma, matching the manufacture. I own this TC but have not had the time to work with it much though. One day I will give it a workout along with the Tamron and we shall see.

Want even more reach, consider a micro 4/3 body with appropriate adapter. Doubling your effective focal length, albeit at a loss of most auto focus/exposure control

For your info ...... any Nikon 1 series body (crop factor x 2.7), coupled with an FT-1 mount adapter, and using any Nikkor AF-S lens, will give you distance and the super fast auto focus of the I system body and full metering. No loss at all.
