I've known many who have converted from Canon, including myself; NOT ONE conversion from Nikon. Hmmm. Wonder why?

I shot Canon for about twenty five years when I was doing film and generally I was happy. Then I went to Nikon where I've been for the past twenty years and I've never looked back. With that background I can say ...

Both makers build damned fine products. Both always catch up to each other too. If one has a feature you are lusting after but your brand is the other, be patient, your brand will have one too sooner or later. So as far as I'm concerned if you're just quibbling about quality they're both the same. If you're quibbling about technical stuff, one always has an edge over the other temporarily but the other always catches up.

So why did I change?

I spent thousands in my Canon days for two camera bodies, and much glass. Then Canon went to autofocus and overnight all the glass was made obsolete. I complained about that and was simply told to buy it all again. I asked for an adapter that would allow me to use my glass on new camera bodies, they refused to provide one though in later years I learned they actually did have an adaptor for the professionals who had spent even more for glass.

By contrast Nikon seems committed to protecting your investment. I've sometimes found a Nikon lens at a garage sale, a lens that goes back to the early seventies, the era of all my Canon glass. Those lenses mount on my modern Nikon DSLRs, they work fine on my D200 (a crop sensor) and even on my D3 and the D800. Had I gone with Nikon in the seventies all the glass I bought I'd be able to use now.

That's why I switched. I can count on Nikon to protect my investment in gear. I later discovered that Nikon feels better in the hand, it's more ergonomic and it has fewer problems with new models. And there are little things too. Whenever I've picked up a Canon body I had to look for the on/off switch, it's always in a different place. Any time I've picked up a Nikon body my finger automatically knows how to turn the camera on. Nikon even tries its best to stay consistent across models.

Why would anyone take a chance on Canon?

For the Nikon fan boys: Let me first say Nikon has surpassed Canon in a very few niche areas ( this is probably very temporary) While Sony has Canon and Nikon both beat with innovation. MOST INTERESTING, is Ken Rockwell's latest epistole ! - http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/00-new-today.htm - scroll down to "Canon or Nikon? " - and, in case you are unaware, Ken Rockwell started out as a Nikon devotee has been for many, many, years and probably knows more about Nikon than ANYBODY !

Two years ago I switched from Nikon to Sony. In the film days I was Minolta fan. When the time came to go digital I went with Nikon. Now I use Sony and have lots of old Minolta glass to choose from. It all works on my Sony bodies DSLR, DSLT and EVIL.

See Trey Ratcliff's article. http://www.stuckincustoms.com/2013/07/04/sony-nex-review-nikon-vs/

I switched from Nikon film gear to Canon digital some years ago.
Though I'm still of the philosophy it's not about the gear it's getting the shot you want, the debate will always continue. I just stay out of the fray as I don't really care if yours is bigger or better than mine. Sometime next week or next year someone else will come along with the next latest and greatest crowing the same song. Until then...

Happy shooting everyone no matter what you shoot with. Have a great week.

Hey Doc ..... ken rockwell is all about the money .....

..... His opinions change like the wind ..... the 50mm standard lens from the film days he hated and never used has now become his lens of choice with the 35mm on a crop sensor Ninon .....

..... he's a very knowledgeable guy and no dummy ..... there's no grass growing under his feet ..... but he's now a advertising site and will promote whatever he's paid for .....

..... he's become a self proclaimed expert on just about anything from a home audio speaker all the way up to a Mercedes Benz with a clock radio in between .....

..... You can find plenty of info on his site but take it all with a grain of salt, he's saying what he gets paid to say .....

..... For a cheap guy that tells ya how to save a few bucks on ya cell phone bill he manages to acquire all the new top of the line photography equipment ..... he claims he has to buy it like everybody else..... if ya believe that you probably still believe in the tooth fairy .....

These are funny .....

This was a very interesting article/blog. Now my decision to buy a sub-$1000 camera is that much harder. Having owned nothing but P&S for the last 15 years, I see this as a great opportunity to bridge between P&S and DSLR.
