Lightroom 5 Moving a Catalog

Currently I have my photos and LR 5 catalog on an external hard drive. I want to move my catalog to my laptop and keep the photos on the hard drive. Can I just move the catalog from the hard drive to my Lightroom folder on my Laptop or is there a certain protocol to follow so no information is lost? Could not find on Adobe site.

Moving a catalogue and previews (you did not mention previews but I think it would be counter productive not to do so) is not to be undertaken lightly or in a hurry. This link makes interesting reading on the subject.

The linked article is incorrectly titled.
Not only is she moving the catalog, she's moving all the image files, too.

The OP need only move the LR folder to his laptop, as all the references to where the actual files are won't have changed.

I keep my Lightroom 5 catalog on in my dropbox folder. That way I can access the updated catalog on all my computers. I use smart previews so I can see and edit the photos on any computer with or without the original files.
