Hey everyone. Can I get some feedback on what DSLR I should buy? I'm still shooting film on my old Canon FTB ql and LOVE it. I've had a few point and shoot digitalis but always go back to my 40 year old Canon for the best quality pictures. I think though I am ready to take the leap officially to a DSLR and need help. I'd like to be able to buy a "kit" with lens and a few accessories but don't know what brand to start looking at. I'm a real Canon fan but had a work assignment throughout the UK where I did use a Nikon DSLR for loads of 360 photography not standard photography so never really got a great feel for Nikon. I am scared to go Sony or Pentax as I feel these brands are the "PC" versions of the DSLR where Nikon and Canon are the "Mac" versions of the camera world. I just don't want to spend $1000 total for something I will have to replace in three years. It's crazy how good the pictures are on my 40 year old camera, give me an idea of a new one that will last half as long as my film camera.

Welcome !! I love the puppy picture. My personal experience: I used a Nikon film camera for years and when it came time to buy digital I couldn't afford the Nikon I wanted and bought a Canon. I also bought a point and shoot Nikon for my husband. The pics from that point and shoot were much better so I put the Canon in the closet and used the Nikon. A couple of years ago I decided I wanted to go back to DSLR and found a magazine that compared all the available cameras. I studied it hard and decided on a Nikon D7000. It didn't take long to realize this was much more advanced so I bought a couple of instructional DVD's and took a couple of Continuing Education classes. As for the Canon, I took it out one day, charged the battery and did some side-by-side shots. A few weeks later I took it to a camera shop and traded it for some other things. I'm sure Canon is much better now than it was then but I do not regret my Nikon purchase. Best of luck with whichever you choose.

I started with Canon in 1975 and just stuck with them. I bought my first L series lens and could not believe the difference in the sharpness of the images. I know a few people that made the switch to Nikon and wish they hadn't done it! But to be fair I know a few that went from Nikon to Canon and they also wished they would have stayed with Nikon. Check out what some of your friends are using with some luck you can find one of each and ask if you can go out shooting with them and see if you can try taking a few shots with each. Compare your shots and See which one feels comfortable to you! I feel you cannot go wrong with Canon or Nikon!!!

Welcom.

My advice to you is to explore your goals and expectations and needs. What photographic topic gives you passion. For me, animals in Africa.

What will you do with the images-sell them?

You are comfortable with Canon, think abou that.

"assuming" you are not an expert, do n'g go with the 1dx,\. Shoot for some rebels with good specs and get a nice lins like the 24/702.5L unock your possibilities

I graduated from an FTB to a T-90 and loved it - what a camera! I now have a Canon DSLR. I just purchased a T3i for my wife, and it is a beautiful/fantastic camera - I purchased it refurbished directly from Canon for $400 with the kit lens. If you are shooting an FTB right now a camera like that will astound you with what it/you can do. It would still leave you some money for accessories and another moderately decent lens. Have fun!

Hi ShutterStud, welcome to the hog. First let me say, ANY camera you buy will be outdated even 1 year from when you purchase it. Do not think about the outdating part. Just get the camera you feel comfortable with...and one that has the bells and whistles you desire at this time. Camera mfgr's are constantly coming out with new gee-gaws to entice the buyer to get the newest model. I have been using a Canon 60D for almost 2 years now and i have yet to totally master it, and also it does what i want it to do.....I also have a I-Mac 27" that i use and it is an older model also. Stop worrying about being outdated...just go out and shoot. P.S. your shot looks great, but, make the horizon line straight.

Welcome to UHH Shutter Stud. Do some research and decide on a couple of Nikon and Canon models. Your local camera store may have a rental shop where you can try out the models you researched. If not Adorama has a rental department, you can try them. Good luck with your search. BTW, I shoot with a Nikon D7100, great camera. You may want to0 put this one on your list.

Beware of JR's PM's to you. He often sends PM's in an effort to avoid criticism he may receive if he puts that information on the forum. Just a friendly caveat. Welcome to the hog. Frankly I do not think you would go wrong with either. They often swap places for lead technology as things progress. I would decide which lens you prefer and go with that brand of body. You will buy many more lens than bodies. You will invest and live with a lens far beyond the life of a body.

Ahh a pearl of wisdom from UHH's #1 world class public welfare system mooch. If you were not such a curt, nasty, snide person totally devoid of people skills you would not be as universally disliked as you are here JR. If that were the case you could post on forum with impunity from the fear of encountering "idiots" like me and the other minions who turn pale upon seeing your avatar.
