I like to shoot high school football games and needless to say you have to have certain equipment to shoot in low-light. I am 16 and on a tight budget. I can only afford to either upgrade my Canon Eos Rebel T3 body to a Eos 7d or 5D mark II, or upgrade my 70-300mm kit lens for a EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM. Which do you think would be the better choice for shooting in low-light? I have herd glass is forever and bodies come and go, but I have also been told that if I upgrade my camera body I will get better noise performance.
7d
EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM
Upgrading your lens will make a much better improvement in your results than upgrading your body at this time.
Listen to MT Shooter , he won't steer you wrong and is always willing to help someone.
to him
MT Shooter knows, listen to him.
I echo the above sentiments.

James, before you drop that lens into your cart, give some careful thought to the bigger picture.
Also look at a fast prime, like the 100, f2 non-L. It's not nearly as versatile as the zoom, but it's twice as fast. I assume you will be on the field/sidelines, no?
If so, you can position yourself in the predetermined spots to get the shot. You will miss some shots, but the ones you get will be much cleaner.
At the price of that prime lens, you should be able to put it onto a used 7D, for about the same money as the zoom. Sell your current Rebel to defray costs.
In the near future get the 70-200, f4 non IS for day games.
James, I'm going to be shooting this years indoor seasons with a fast prime. I won't get all the shots. But what I do get, will blow my zoom away.
Always look at the biggest picture, then decide what works best for YOU.

I agree. This is a good approach for you to consider James. ;)

To shoot in low light, a fast lens is required. F2.8 if possible. The lens is the most important part of a camera. Consider a fresnel lens adapter for you flash. This concentrates the light into a narrow beam, which in turn gives more light to the subject. Very low cost. Avoid long zoom lens that start at a wide lens opening at short distance, and end up at F5.6, F6.3 when extended to the maximum magnification. They are useless for what you are doing. It is tough being on a budget. Consider a fast prime lens telephoto.
No brainer, the better lens.
Dave.
I'm in a similar situation, however I have a 7D and would not go to a M2 because the 7D is a better camera. I have decided to stay with my 7D and save for better L lenses, like the 70-200 2.8 IS USM, and the 24-70mm.
The 7D is a spectacular camera. IMHO, rugged and full featured. I would buy another one as a backup.

Hi James,
The 7D is great for football and I would get the lens or lenses :EF 300mm f/4L IS USM or EF 100-400mm-f-4.5-5.6L IS USM. I believe you will get some great images with these lenses.
For whom do you shoot --- your self or for your school ???? If for your own enjoyment--mow grass, wash dishes, shuffle burgers--whatever it takes. If you are shooting officially for the school--ask the AD for help (he can put you "unofficially" on his budget. If he says "no", tell him to take his own pix. Alyn
A trick I been doing for over a year buying film cameras on ebay for the lenses. Just know what the lenses mount is for you camera is. I use a Canon Eos Rebel 450. You can save money big time on ebay.

I agree with this. Your camera body is fine, not optimal, but fine and adding a fast lens such as the 100mm f/2 will do you very well if you follow SS's positioning tips.
