What type of camera would somebody suggest. I've been using SLR all my life and now I'm looking to carry less around.

Canon SX50 or Sony DSC-HS300. Both have long zooms and decent IQ for PS cameras. If you're looking for more IQ and willing to take less zoom, look at NEX 6, G15, RX-100

http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon-PowerShot-SX50-HS-vs-Sony-Cyber-Shot-DSC-HX300

Be advised that part of the lower rating of the Sony is due to to the manufacturer failing to supply specs that SnapSort uses in their ratings; the Canon won those categories by default.

The Canon SX-200 series (current model is the SX-280) has simply the best image quality that I have ever seen in a point and shoot. And, I have unfortunately seen a lot of them...

I asked basically the same question a few days ago,
and for the same reason.
got a lot of good responses, and mostly
about the canon SX50.
that seemed to be the point & shoot of choice

I feel your pain, Norman. I made the switch to the Canon SX-50 and have never regretted it. I enjoy the 'freedom' from luggage while still getting acceptable shots. Check it out. Love the zoom feature.

If you don't mind working around a 35mm equivalent lens, I absolutely love my Fuji X100s, takes me from this photo equipment era, strait back to real photography again. Still have my 6D system, but find myself thinking up excuses to take the X100s instead.

My wife recently got a Nikon P510 as a retirement gift and it is one nice camera...sharp color....clear shots and the 42 times zoom is fantastic.
It is making shambles of my Sony with an 18/250 lens.

What do you like the most, least, and what are you willing to compromise? Super zoom, longer zoom, no zoom, high IQ, low light performance, large sensor, price, etc. Research and decide for yourself. No one knows better than you what is important, what is not, and what you may or may not be comfortable with.

The Fuji SL1000. It has a 50x zoom, panoramic feature and more. Plus it`s easy to use. Check out the reviews on Amazon.

I see you are in hiding, if you are in the UK, I will sell you my SX50!

My advice if you are coming from DSLR is to go for a camera with a larger (four thirds or APS-C) sensor

Hi,

I am a fan of the Panasonic FZ 150 and FZ 200. You can do some compare and contrast at www.dpreview.com on many cameras FYI.

Hope you find something that fits the bill for you.

I have a Canon SX50 and a Fuji X20. SX50 for the zoom, it's fantastic. X20 for picture quality. See my post in picture Gallery.
