On line deals ??

I've decided that a 5d MIII is going to make it's way into my camera bag. As much as I would like to support my local camera shop , A) there isn't one near by and B) the local tax in Chicago area is just plain silly. That being said, I am seeing the $3500 camera at some online shops for as low as $2200. Does anyone have a story they could share about getting a great deal online and have a happy ending to it.? I 've read all the small print and don't see anything REDFLAG like, but they have to be too good to be true. They have good ratings....... Hearing from someone that actually used an online site and was glad would help my cause. Thanks in advance.

I've decided that a 5d MIII is going to make it's ... (show quote)

If it were me, I'd ONLY buy from the main reputable sellers...B&H, Samy's, Adorama, calumet, etc...

Being able to return a 2,500 camera no questions asked is a load off my mind and worth a few bucks.

Nothing wrong with buying online but you must be careful who you're buying from.

If it SEEMS too good to be true......

thats why I posted. If it seems to good to be true, what?? If they have a return policy and they don't state it's a refurbished (I would be a refurb) the question is and I am hoping to learn from someone , what is the downside. ?

ok, well this thread can end here. I just got off the phone with Canon and the refurbished 5dM3 is on the way. Saved a ton and I am a happy soul. Looking forward to applying all I have learned over the yrs with my T2i, 50d and 7d to this new wonder.

Go to the Canon store website. They have refurb for $2799.21 with the normal warranty.

http://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/cameras/refurbished-eos-digital-slr-cameras/eos-5d-mark-iii-body-refurbished

I purchase regularly from Canon USA website, refurbs and new items. They always have something on sale or promotion.

Edit: sorry this posted before your last purchase comment

Don't worry. The way some people act, there will be fewer and fewer camera shops across the country; the same is true for many other local businesses. And if you think your taxes are high now, just wait and see how much they increase when local businesses fail. You'll end up paying their property, inventory and sales taxes - plus a surcharge for falling prey to to convenience of on-line buying.

much of the equipment i have was not availiable at my local brick and morter store. it is a good one by the way. they didn't have the pentax camera or lenses i wanted. or the sony camera and minolta lenses i wanted. on line was my only choice.

Lots of folks have posted here about being very pleased with Canon refurbished items, so I just purchased my wife a refurbished T3i - she loves it/me - it is a beautiful camera and functions perfectly. Let us know how your camera works out!

Stick with camera dealer with a good name. I use B&H and have never been sorry ..... With a couple thousand dollars at stake do you really want to risk getting S*****D to save a few hundred? I know money is tight BUT .... being able to return something without question is priceless. Remember if the price is too low to be true, it probably is. When all the big names have a camera for one price and a few have it for substantially less there is a reason. The camera is refurb or just the camera and no charger/battery (which is extra) or an import model or it is plain BAIT! Another option is buy refurb from Canon. I have never bought refurb but the people who have swear you can not tell the difference from a new camera except for the price being lower.

Good luck on your purchase.

No camera store in Chicago? I don't believe that for a moment - so I Googled:
http://chicago.cbslocal.com/top-lists/best-camera-stores-in-chicago/
Sales tax in Chicago, according to an article I found by Googling as well, 9 1/2 % - guess you could come to BC, buy here and get charged 12%....
Still, I'd rather buy local and talk to and buy from people in a brick-and-mortar store, than order on-line.

Even worse: people go to a brick-and-mortar store, handle the equipment, get all their questions answered, then go home and order on-line to save ten bucks.
