I think you mean the D7100 as Nikon does not make a D7200.
The D5200 and D7100 share the exact same Toshiba 24MP sensor. The D7100 has considerable better build quality, weather sealing, internal AF drive motor and double SD card slots. The D5200 costs quite a bit less and has a flip-out LCD screen.
In the past two months I have taken 5 Canons in on trade for Nikon bodies, at least 8 Nikons in on Newer Nikon bodies, and yet to have a customer inquire at all about trading a Nikon in on a Canon body. That says a lot to me as I offer a full line of both brands for sale and rent. Every Canon body in my store except the 6D has been acquired through trade-in on Nikon products.

Nice antidote, but if you read tests from independent labs you will find that both companies have what are considered epic pieces of glass (that being said you can get a bad copy of any lens including zeiss). Nikon may have jumped slightly ahead in the pixel war and slightly better dynamic range in D800 vs. 5d mk III but the one DX and white superteles are still the majority at any sporting venue. Additionally, even the D800 vs. 5d mk III comparison, the 5D Mk III is probably a more versatile shooter sharing the 65 point auto focus that the I DX employs. I would venture to say that dollar for dollar they are still equal and most people make their buying decision on how heavily they are invested in glass.

"Border skirmishes" are generally driven by: "I bought 'X' brand-- and I have to validate my decision, so your choice is wrong unless it agrees with mine."

Bottom line: you can't go wrong with either-- unless of course you purchased neither!

I still love my Canon cameras but I recall (while I was going to college) that Nikon boasted about making their own glass for their lenses. Canon never replied to that Nikon Advertising. Canon never stated that they made their own glass (or even who does make their glass). So, I've always felt Nikon had better optics (whether or not that's actually true).

You actually believe advertising?

If you make your own glass you are ties to it no matter how good or bad it is. If you source your glass from somewhere else you can chose the very best from other companies - just a thought.

As for tests - I can find several that say Canon is better than Nikon and you could find several others that say Nikon is better than Canon. Who is to say who is right?

I've been shooting with Canon for over 30 years now and I'm considering a "cropped sensor" DSLR by Nikon.

I was wondering...

What's the difference between Nikon's d5200 sensor and the d7200 sensor?

and...

Does the 7200 have a vari-angle screen?

Thanks in advance for the input! :)

This thread has been interesting to read up to here. I've jumped back and forth across the Canon - Nikon border a few times in the last 45 years and there are, at given points, advantages on one side or the other worth jumping the fence for but back to you, I gotta say, if you've got all the kinks worked out of yourself to the point that all you have to be concerned with is a little bit of warming additive in the lens tint, you should be alright whichever side of the fence you wind up on and I'm sure gonna be watching for your images to show up on here so I can appreciate them and hopefully learn a lot from you. I'm about ready to fork over my 5D2 to someone else about any time. Only thing that bothers me about all of this is why you aren't looking at a D800 unless, like me, the kids all need new shoes to go with all them new school clothes.

I know just how Patton felt when he said, "God, I love war," 'cause God, I love this uhh!!! I get to regularly spit venom and it keeps me from having to dodge all that flyin' dinnerware.

Nikon's mount itself may be universal, but lens functionality is not, so Nikon legacy lenses are not without their own limitations.

....and what would be the point of using a DX lens on an FX body?

I can still use my 1968 non-AI Nikkor lenses on my Nikon DSLR with little home modification, can still metering on A and M mode, MF,of course.

DX lens can be used on the FX body too, if set the FX camera to DX crop mode, it will be just like on a DX body with less pixel which I don't care about that.

Just to open up the conversation I will propose another option. first of all let me state that Canon and Nikon both make great camera's. That said, I am a former Nikon user who is now using
Sony cameras. Consider a Sony NEX 3,5,6 or 7 and you can still use all your Canon lenses with an adapter.

I'm a Canon man. If I was starting out today I would give serious consideration to the D7100 or D800 if you want FF. Nikon seems to win the heads up comparisons but IMHO for what the vast majority of people shoot, view, and print you can't really "see" the difference. Perhaps if you pixel peep then maybe.

If you have a significant investment in modern Canon lenses then I would stay with Canon. If you don't or money is no object then try out the latest Canons and Nikons and buy the one you like best.

Now all you guys who are looking for super sharp pictures there is a solution for all brands of cameras to produce extremely sharp pictures, its called spending the $275 and having the AA Filter removed you get amazingly blazingly scalpel sharp pictures.

For $275 I'll glady remove the AA filter from your D7100

It doesn't have one in the first place, which, at least in theory, would give the D7100 an advantage in IQ over the D5200 even with the same sensor. I haven't done my own testing, so read the reviews if that's something that might sway your purchase choice.
