Thanks for that. The distortion that one can detect round the hairlinen is one reason I made no attempt to do it quite apart from the fact that I don't have the technical skill. One of the charms of the shot is what I remember of the excursion in a particularly beautiful place by a river.

I like Wahawk's edit but understand you wanting to remember the location and your time spent there. If you had an unobstructed landscape shot of the area, you could blend the two photos together, creating a better image and still keep the memory of the excursion.

Below is my attempt by using cloning & cropping to keep background intact while removing distractions.

Thanks Fawlty, that comes out pretty well. I was going to make an attempt at it myself this afternoon but maybe now I don't need to although I might just try as an exercise.

That's quite amazing. What program did you use? Will Lightroom do that?

Original picture corrections using CS6. Everything that was not completely blown is back onto the picture.

Also it is sharper as I used clarity import option to gain back what had become nearly invisible.

I sent the whole process in private. Note the clarity option is available on CS ONLY if you open the file as RAW (This is also a good time to switch to 16bit colors). This particular way of opening a file using RAW adjustment if often overlooked.

Using a contrast layer and the paint tool you can recreate revert the background to it's original shade...
