Another reason not to buy an iMac.

Last January I got my 27 inch Mac and bought a portable DVD drive for $39 to have when I needed it. Eight months later I have yet to need the drive (see Apple knows what is best for me).

This attitude is just plain Scary!!! OMG, are you serious? Apple knows what's best for you? I have a mac laptop, but it's the last mac I'll ever own. Yes it is a quality piece of equipment, but nothing is worth letting a company control how I do things. It's a path we don't want to go down people. There's a point where we will never really own anything we buy. All our information will be stored on the internet, all our software will be rented. Then it will be like cable, and they can charge anything they want. RESIST!

We build all our own computers for our business. If something goes wrong with one of mine, I just know my husband has something in the computer junk yard to keep it going until we get a part ordered in. :-D It's the way to go!

Seriously??? The attitude was a joke but the computer is not, it is a wonderful piece of machinery. Why supply an optical drive for less than 5% of the computer users. Imagine this, an optical drive weighs about 1/2 a pound. Apple sells several million DVD driverless computers a year. Even if it was only 2 million that means one million pounds less freight a year Apple has to ship a year. It is a simple matter of economics. Apple is not controlling how you think or what you buy anymore than any other company. Apple did not disable their/your computer so that an optical drive won't work, they left that technology in the machine. If you need a drive you can still buy an external drive for $39 if you really need one, the majority of the people do not. If you can not afford $39 for a drive you can not afford a Mac so I fail to see what the issue is?

I love my ipad for what it does do well but also hate it for it's "apple knows best" and it's paltry choices of connectivity to peripherals. I will never go to an Apple laptop because of the Apple knows best" affliction which I detest. There are also business applications that do not run on Macs so even I could get past the control freak Job's legacy, the lack of being as versatile as a pc would stop it dead in it's tracks for my consideration. Ok, let the Apple Dumpling gang start the flames!

That's good to know, boydimages. I use the CD burner in my iMac to burn music CDs to use in the car. Hate the idea of the Cloud, but it looks like that's the way things are going. I'm glad Apple computers last a long time, I'll be hanging on to my current one for quite a while!

Apple has a great OS but not worth dealing with their controlling way of doing business. But remember the components in an apple pc/laptop are the same as in a pc.

It does have a great OS. Way better than Windows 7. Much better organized. We have replaced the hard drive in my Macbook Pro. It just bugs me when companies try to control your information. I want to keep my photos on files in my home, on my hard drive, not stored on the world wide web, in some cloud. That's where it's all headed.

Yes but they actually work in a iMac, much more stable than windows ever was. One other thing when it is time to upgrade the operating system software (i.e. Lion to Mountain Lion) Apple charged $19.99 for the upgrade. Microsoft (Windows) charges six to ten times and more for their upgrades ($129 to $249) depending on whether you want the regular or Pro upgrade. Apple, one system one price. When I turn on my iMac it is ready to go in 18 seconds. My neighbour uses a PC and after he powers it on he goes and makes a cup of coffee, comes back and still has to wait for it to be operational. I believe almost any honest Windows user will agree with my last statement. Simply put "Apple cost more (initially but less expensive overall) for their computers because they are worth it".
