Err , it will not capture pictures, the picture will not show up in the viewer it is simply not taking the picture. I read a comment by another post that said take lens off, it may reset, but was not helpful for me.
Any help for me? I did not find the manual helpful at all...

Start with a freshly charged battery.
While the battery is out, turn the camera power switch on and operate all the switches and dials.
Insert the battery.
If you still get the error, try cleaning the lens contacts like others have said.
On my D200's, you need to take a shot in Manual Exposure to clear the error.

I had the same thing happen when I bought a used D80. It was the shutter going bad. Fortunately since I had only had the camera a few days the seller took it back. It was repairable but $250 ~ $300 was more than I paid for the camera and was not going to happen. Your ERR message could be anything. The ERR is a camera malfunction code and not specific. Have the camera checked out by an AUTHORIZED Nikon service center.
I didnt see it mentioned, but the lens must be locked with the aperture wide open, or you get some sort of an ERR message.
Of Course Cupcake, ask your brother, surly he has had the same error message.
EstherP said in part "Page 129 gives instructions for reset,"
And EstherP in the words Ronald Regan used to admonish you, "there you go again," reading manuals and dashing all that fun of un/ill-informed speculation by others who can not or do not read.
We, the USA, are just above Tonga in our literacy, but do not worry EstherP we are at 99%* capable of reading simple sentences, but far below that surly for reading and understanding Nikon Manuals.
*Not to be confused with the 1% who hold most of the wealth in the USA.

Well, obviously OP had missed the information in her manual, as she said in her message,
" I did not find the manual helpful at all..."
I'm sorry if you don't like it that I can and will look up things in manuals, and post my findings if I
1. have time to do that
2. think it will help OP

EstherP, love your smile and your drive to understand and read. I like what you do and you are a great resource and I speak only in praise of your helpfulness.
Too easy for us to become sensitive because there are many who focus on accentuating the U in UHH. I am not one of those, as MaMa said, "If you can not say something good bout some one then keep the mouth shut." My Dad added "or they will shut it for you." I have never had a negative or U thought about you... I too read a lot... technical ... not novels .... I can keep the parts straight in my mind but not the people. Parts are logical; people are not.
If I could not occasionally tease you about what I consider a great virtue (that most of us should have), well,,, I would miss it and you.

Another "I'm sorry" then!
I really had read your message as something along the lines of "here we go again, miss know-it-all".
May I ask for a favour then? I don't mind teasing and can take it, but obviously in the printed word, it sometimes is impossible to tell what is teasing and what is serious.
If you would put a smiley in the text, I would know you were just teasing and I'd sit here with a grin on my face, instead of getting my hackles up... ;-)
