Sitting here on New Year's eve trying to tune up my skills in a few areas and picking up some of my old photos for subject matter. Picked on this poor hapless waterfall picture as a target...what's your opinion? Does the "enhancement" add anything?
Colorado Waterfall - version 1
Colorado Waterfall - version 2
I like the first one better. Better focusing and more detail

Ya I think you're right on this size screen...when I looked at it on the full screen in looked better...back to the drawing board.
What I don't understand is how some people think they can radically "improve" something that dosen't need anymore than maybe a slight "twiqueing"...

Thanks...I understand, and I am guilty as charged, but this is a slow afternoon and I downloaded a demo version of Nik's HDR software. I'm using it on a single file here (not multiple shots), and seeing what comes out...never used it before. This might drive you nuts, but here's another effect (there are hundreds, and I won't go further)
HDR effect
Bmac
Loc: Long Island, NY
I would stick with the first, unaltered version.
the original is sharper and better.
RMM
Loc: Suburban New York
I'm with the rest of the crowd. The first version has good exposure and saturation, and doesn't seem to need anything to improve it. If you want to PLAY with it for dramatic effect, try duplicating the image on a new layer and apply a 50 percent opacity using Hard mix mode. But that's with a completely different intent!
First,i am about to try this HDR thing today
I feel like a sheep.... #1 by all means.
Ok I did try a number of edits on this picture using Nik and Topaz plug-ins. It probably wasn't the best choice for some of the tests but it did teach me something about these packages. Thanks you all for your thoughts. It helps to bounce things around. By the way, you can download trial versions of this software and they do some pretty neat things.
