Will they stop grazing & give you "ears up" if you whistle? Not being able to give 'em sugar makes it tougher, but if they're habituated to people so well, the captures could be even better. Agree with the "other stuff" in the shot- Hard to convince people they're "Wild Horses" standing next to a camper !

Yeah theyre pretty attentive and reactive. Ive got some "ears up" shots. I'll post when I can but you can definitely make 'em change pose.

Thank you for posting. Beautiful shots. It is DEFINITELY on my list of things to do before I die. I grew up on Marguarite Henry books. Even wrote to her a few times and she wrote back!! What a wonderful women. Probably the reason for my love of horses. My favorite books to this day are Misty of Chincoteague and Stormy Misty's foal

The rules are that you cant touch or feed them. Unfortunately, the "touristas" roll down windows and feed them Cheetos and stuff, so they are fearless. I was walking briskly to my truck and he just kept coming and nipped my backside and when I closed the truck door he tugged at the side mirror.
Most of the day I was within a half dozen steps or so. When they munch the grass, you can feel the vibration in the ground. The big roundup with real cowboys takes place every year on the Virginia side of the island (Chincoteague) and the proceeds benefit the local fire department. It is sanctioned by the government and has been going on since the 40s. That herd is bigger and they "drive" them through the surf to the pens. The herd at Assateague is about 60 horses and are never captured, penned (unless they are determined to need vet care) or sold.
Its worth the trip, the photo ops are close and candid.
Camping, canoeing, beaches are available in the park. An RV park is about 3 miles away on the same road and there are many hotels within 7-8 miles. Ocean City (8 miles away)has a great boardwalk , beaches and attractions too.
I'd recommend you go a bit "offseason" to have time and less intrusion into your shots. These were taken in March, April, and May.

Ha! You're not the only one to be bitten by a Chincoteage!! A friend years ago had two of these ponies as they are popular on the barrel racing circuit. Her first one "Geronimo" gave me a nip on my tuckus as I was walking out of the corral, and the second she actually trucked up from the swim was a runt and he was a nasty little thing! He was the last pony at auction and her husband "dared" her to bet. Well, she won the pony and a whole lot of headaches to go with it!

That's why I was wondering how close you can get, but I'm not looking to be nipped again. Been there...done that with a somewhat domesticated Chincoteage!

I'd still love to photograph them someday!

Being fairly new here, I am just now this thread. The words "horses" and "ponies" always grabs my eye. Nice photos and interesting story...

He may have been the alpha stallion and they are never happy when you get too close to their mares. Probably funny to you now.

Well, Horseart,
They arent supposed to be fed by tourists. But the "city folk" roll down the windows and feed 'em Cheetos and crap, so they are bold and come to expect a handout. I think he thought my camera was "food".
The only reason your explanation might be true is that once I got to the truck, he kept tossing his head and trying to chew and pull the side view mirror.
Glad you saw the thread. Theyre gorgeous. Only regret is that I didnt get any running in the surfshots the 2 days I was there. Thanks for commenting.

Rocco. the only reason I said that is that over the period of 48 years, we have raised over 300 horses in small herds like, 40, 56 and 77 mares at a time and always have a stallion or two. I have known of two owners killed by their own (normally sweet) stallions when they got too close to his mares. Just the nature of a stallion, but in the case there, it COULD be a food issue. After raising, breaking riding and showing horses for this long, I can look and tell the difference. The look in their eyes is the difference in anxiety or pure anger. If you se anger, RUN! LOL!
PS: Do you have more shots or are you perhaps going back to try for more?

Love the young one #1. You can tell there is a rich chestnut coat under those golden sorrel highlights.
WOW, I posted before the rest came on. Love that bay, the black and red colors looks so sharp together. He'll shed off a blood-bay and the Tobiano paint is a beauty. Who's getting bored??? Not I, for sure! Horses will never bore this old woman!
