As the news tellsl, California is burning. A local photographer took, and published on the internet news, some amazing night photographs showing a couple of firefighters in the foreground and close-in trees and brush in flames. The colors were vivid reds and orange and a soft light on te ground in dabs. Is it a filter, or a setting or what. Any suggestions?

Justin Sullivan and Max Whitaker are two photogs "embedded" with firefighters there, could it be one of their shots you are referring to?
A pic or at least a link to it would really improve your chances of getting your question answered.

Sorry . . . I tried to download and then use the browse feature on his site. It didn't work. I suspect that they may have photop-shopped their photos to make the colors more vivid--but--that is simple conjecture. Thank you anyway.

If you're referring to one firefighter resting on the ground while another is by the truck, the firefighters are part of a crew that moved into a recently contained area during the late daylight. They are safe, even though the flames appear fairly close. They will be going on shift after nightfall and will stay for 12 hours, widening the containment area. Believe me, at least one member of the crew is actively patrolling the perimeter watching not only for surface and crown activity, but for indications of subsurface activity, a most insidious danger. They are also cognizant of potential flashovers, but would only battle such a fire until more experienced crews arrive.

Occasionally a media outlet will enhance a photo or video because fires do not appear bright red during the day and may even blend with the backgroungs on slopes or clay-rich areas. One TV station in the Reno area does this sort of thing because unenhanced videos can give evacuees a false sense of hope and cause them to try to return too soon.

Thank you for the come back. Here in Lake County we had two fires in the last three days. The North Shore Cal Fire guys jumped on them both hard and fast and headed them before they got out of control like so many other fires in our state.
