Folks, whatever kind words you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
I have a canon 5D MKIII. What aspect ratio setting would be the best choice for printing large images of landscapes?

You really need to define the final print size and then calculate the ratio of width to height which is the aspect ratio.

People are getting hung-up in the final photo size!! You paid dearly for the MPx... So you gather as much MPX as possible and compose and then crop for desired size... why trash part of that expensive sensor by using an aspect ratio differing from the "native" L to W ration of the sensor.

Please Cam1017 and others who say change camera aspect ratio... inform me of the logic... please... am I the one that is confused??

Since the book for the 5dm3 indicates it takes pictures only in the 3:2 aspect ratio, you don't have very many options.

I don't know if you are confused or not, but if you are going to end up cropping a picture to the same pixel dimensions of an aspect ratio you can take in camera, it's sort of the old 'six of one, half a dozen of another' thing .

I agree with you completely. I was only trying to deal with aspect ratio to print size and do as you have suggested. :-)

I've enjoyed everyone's comments on this subject. It never ceases to amaze me of how many times I have a question in my head and look at UHH and there is a recent topic going on about it.

No you are not confused. Your logic makes sense.
But I can think of a couple of instances where people may want to do it differently.

Some scenes may just scream for a particular ratio. Turning the camera to that ratio in camera may make it easier for some people to fine tune the composition.

As has been evident on here recently some people just cannot get their head around how to crop or resize or reshape a 3x2 ratio file into an 8x10" print. Now I have no idea why they have a problem with that, it is as simple as chips to me, but, if it was my mum, I would change her camera to a 4x5 ratio and hand it back to her.Problem solved.

Thanks Cam1017.. the Dr. says with a print out of your post in my file they will let me out in two das as long as I say nothing radical .. like cameras other than Canon and Nikon are very good... sssssh... they are down the hall!!! They put me in here when I said out-loud that Sony makes sensors for Nikon. I was sick, I thought it was true ... and yes, my Panasonic ZS-20 does not really take better photos with the Leica badge glued to it... ssss.. they are the same camera...

The aspect ratio can be changed in a 5D III but you must be shooting in LiveView for it to work. It will automatically make jpg images with that aspect ratio but raw will not. Although the raw image can be viewed with the camera aspect ratio in DPP software provided by Canon.

Its interesting that the older I get no matter what I sometimes say despite my best intentions I manage to see both sides and am less likely to get pissed off. Now there are some in UHH that I do get pissed at and if near enough like Cheech and the Border Guard would piss on!! (Up in Smoke 1978) Those are the virulent wrong sayers who stick to their twisted guns in spite of scientific references ....

Its interesting that the older I get no matter what I sometimes say despite my best intentions I manage to not really deeply care about a lot of things. My BP is more important than issues. As long as we know that is what counts..... stay cool stay alive

PS: I actually did attach a Leica badge (via china of course) to my ZS20. It is exactly same as Leica .... when introduced in 2011 Panasonic was $400, and the Leica Badged Panasonic was $700!! Badges 2/$7.50 :!:  :?:
