No, not in the least. It's just like the article says they will no longer offer free support for it. XP hardly has enough steam to run a decent media program as it is, I dumped it as soon as Windows 7 was released.

I guess I am lost with this issue. I have been running xp since it came out and have never had any problem. It runs all my media and I can do graphics better then a mac. I have been turning out great 16x20 canvas portraits with great resolution. It does all my dvd movies and gives me the music cd that will hold 500 songs for that long road trip to ohio.still I hear how bad it is all the time. I just bought a windows 7 and formated the hard drive to xp. I guess I must be the odd one. 8-)

I'm having problems getting help from my laptop retailer, manufacturer and Microsoft to reinstall MS Office 2007 on WIN 7.

Don't want MS Office 2010. Don't want WIN 8.

Looks like I'll be installing LINUX 8-) and going back to using Open Office.

You won't be sorry and you won't look back. Ubuntu & Mint are the most popular versions. Check Distrowatch.com for descriptions of nearly all versions. Also WINE app will allow you to run many Windows apps.

Am running WIN 7 on laptop. Have purchased a new external hard drive. I have a PC using XP which I no longer use because of a bad power switch.

1a. When I remove that PC's hard drive how do I transfer XP and all files to the new external hard drive after I partition the new external hard drive?

or

1b. How do I use that hard drive as another external hard drive for the laptop? if no can do #1b then do #2 below.

2. From #1a above, how do I partition the new external hard so that I can run WIN 7 and XP?

3. How do I change the boot up procedure on the laptop so I can select WIN 7 or XP?

By the way regarding that PC someone told me that its power switch is a part of the cabinet. All I have to do is replace the cabinet. True or false :?: :?: Replacing the cabinet is not what was said at the computer retail store.

OK, the Operating System (XP, Win 7, Win 8, Linux) operates (runs) the computer. Older operating systems like XP are more fragile when attacked by malware, newer OS are more robust. Linux is UNIX for the PC mostly maintained by hobbyists (Yes, I know this is facile but it is not wrong) with so small a market footprint that the bad guys more or less ignore it. The best reason for upgrading a Windows install is that, SOMEBODY IN RUSSIA WANTS YOUR MONEY!

A "file system" is the structure for saving and finding your files in mass storage (the hard disk). There are NO XP files or Win 7 files, for that matter. XP, Win 7 and Win 8 use NTFS (New Technology File System) invented years ago (20? 25?). A file written by Win 2000, XP, Win 7, anything, can be read by them all. I haven't tried it, but I expect my Win 7 can read FAT files (really old and fragile). Something as important as file management has to be backward compatible.

I hate this as much as you do (well, maybe not as much because I'm a semi-geek) but your life HAS TO pay attention to the Russians who want your money. Neither you nor I can fight them by ourselves, we need a company like Microsoft on our side. You have to buy a better box and a better OS.

That said, take your laptop to somebody who knows what he is doing.

the on off switch is a monitary micro switch which can be replaced very cheaply. I have been given many laptop just for that reason. I tell the people that they are fixable but they just want something new. I repair them and donate them to familiess who can't afford to have one for their kids to have one for school. My local church have families who really need help
